THE WHO ANNOUNCE North American TOUR.....

The Who will bring 'Quadrophenia' back for North American tour
    July 18, 2012|By Randy Lewis

The Who will embark on the group’s first North American tour in four years this fall with an arena presentation of the 1973 rock opera “Quadrophenia” in its entirety.

The venerable British band, fronted by surviving original members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, also promises to survey other hits from the group’s career on the new tour that opens Nov. 1 in Sunrise, Fla., and concludes Feb. 26 in Providence, R.I., with Southern California stops on Jan. 28 in Anaheim, Jan. 30 in Los Angeles and Feb. 5 in San Diego.

An American Express pre-sale for the U.S. dates runs July 23rd-26th and July 23rd-25th in Canada before the general public on sales beginning on Friday, July 27th at 10:00 A.M local time.

In a statement accompanying the announcement of the tour, Townshend said he thinks “Quadrophenia” remains resonant today because, “In 1972 I was twenty-eight, writing about London and Brighton in 1963 and 1964 when the band was just starting. I was still young enough to remember how it felt to be 16 or 17, and at war with my parents, bosses and authority.

“I could still remember that feeling of struggling to fit in, something that happened to me when I was even younger, around 14, and everyone around me seemed to have got their lives on track,” Townshend said. “ This is such a universal experience for young people that it has echoed.”

Townshend and Daltrey will be joined by bassist Pino Palladino, who joined the band after John Entwistle died in 2002, and drummer Zak Starkey, who stepped in following Keith Moon’s death in 1978. The group will be rounded out by guitarist Simon Townshend (Pete’s brother), keyboardist Chris Stainton, Loren Gold and musical director-keyboardist Frank Simes.

In addition, select movie theaters will screen the documentary "The Who: Quadrophenia -- Can You See the Real Me?" on July 24. Details can be found here on the Fathom Events website.

The author of the LA Times article thinks Zak Starkey has been playing for the Who since 1978? Fucking idiot.

Perhaps Kenny Jones was not quite the drummer they needed as a replacement, he STILL DID play for them for a few years.

    Oh well.

I WANT to see this bad. I have never seen The Who (even though this is only half-a-Who), though I did see Roger Daltrey open for Eric Clapton a couple of years back.

It is going to be the only opportunity I have to see Pete Townsend live.

But I have other priorities for the moment.

Might get lucky and get a ticket later on. The show in Nashville IS 5 months away.

The Who to honor tickets from canceled December 1979 show.

Earlier this week, The Who announced their first tour in four years, where they will perform their classic 1973 album, Quadrophenia, in its entirety. Now, one venue on the tour is offering a sweet deal for some long-time fans that managed to hold on to a tiny piece of cardboard for a long time: it’ll be honoring canceled concert tickets from a show 33 years ago.

As SPIN.com points out, fans still in possession of tickets from the band’s canceled December 1979 show can exchange these rock artifacts when the band plays the Providence, Rhode Island’s Dunkin’ Donuts Center on February 26th, 2013. The original show was canceled by then-mayor of Buddy Cianci after a previous concert in Cincinnati left 11 people dead.

“Somewhere, someplace, someone’s got it stashed,” said venue general manager Lawrence Lepore during the announcement on Rhode Island’s WPRO-AM radio station. “The question is, are they willing to give that up? If they are, we’re willing to take it.”

Fans looking to make ticket exchanges can contact Lepore’s office (more info here). Those tickets will then be donated to help raise money for the Special Olympics of Rhode Island.

Back in the day Townsend played loud to hear himself above Moonie.

Then when he got deaf, he played loud just to hear himself, lol.

The Marshall stack really was the result of having a loud drummer. Jimmy Page said he started using Marshall stacks becaus Bonzo was so loud. The of course Jim Marshall was a drummer himself.

That was one of the reasons why Townsend and Entwistle went to Jim Marshall in the mid-60s....they could not hear themselves above Moonie and needed amp/speaker combos that would be loud enough...

I sure hope I get to go to this...

Yeah they had Jim make them 8x12 cabs but the roadies complained they were too hard to move so they made two 4x12 cabs and the stack as we know it was born.

That documentary was on UK TV just the other week, on BBC. It was excellent - unfortunately it's no longer on BBC iPlayer, but there are a few short clips here:

Well, guess what? Some dude has put the whole thing on youtube - catch it before it gets yanked:

When I was first getting into classic rock as a teenager, The Who were one of the bands that I really took to. I still listen to "Who's Next" from time to time, which I think is their best. I just looked at some YouTubes from a few years ago and Daltrey's voice seems to be holding up pretty well for his age. I would consider going if the prices aren't exorbitant.

How do you know Pete's deaf?

He can stand next to Roger Daltrey on stage and not realize that he can't fucking sing anymore.

It's time to hang it up already. All the power The Who once had currently resides in Hell. And Moon & Entwistle performing with anybody else down here sounds infinitely better than that horrible display at the Super Bowl a few years ago.
