I prefer to use a bit of noise reduction on gritty signals and then re-sweeten it with a touch of eq.
Not a big fan of gating, I find it a bit squishy.
You might wanna let it sit until you add drums to the picture. It's amazing what you can get away with once them cymbals start a smashin !

Correct, except dunno if I'd agree about the "ton" thing...only weighs like 98 lbs.. I've got two of them, had them since '86 and '89 respectively. Two slanted cabs, never really wanted to do the "full" stack thing... toying with the idea of throwing some Scumbacks in one.

Yeah, probably won't leave the gate I put on it to bounce the MP3 permanently...

          Always learning...

Not to derail, but one thing I'm noticing - amp emulations are/can be useful for low to medium-gain tones - they're more passable, but high-gain tones especially are still a real amp's strength. There's something, IMO going on that just can't be emulated. It's also noticeable on lower-gain tones, but for example today I doubled the Strat track on the tune I posted the other day that I'd used the PODfarm JCM800 mod on - with the Boogie on it's medium-gain 2nd channel (also known sometimes as the "Marshall" or "Brown" channel), and even though I couldn't crank it up to get the full *KONG* out of it (got close, but someone was home nearby), it still has something the Marshall emulation doesn't - the quintessential Strat cluck and sparkle is far more evident, and the tone is just more present overall. It actually mixes very well with the emulation, which is not so the case with the heavy tracks I did with the Koa Strat with the humbucker and the Soldano mod vs. the Boogie lead channel...the Boogie track makes the emulation sound scratchy and fizzy by comparison (and it doesn't sound terrible like that on it's own!).

One thing I've started doing (after revisiting the Recabinet tutorial vid) is I'm starting off tracking EVERYthing, amp or emulation, with the "Green 4x12" cab with the Royer 121 mic in the Edge 4 setting...sounds great on everything! THEN you add in the 57s, D6s and whatnots...I was tracking with the U87 because I'd read Max Norman used it on Randy's cabs a lot, but I'm thinking I like the 121 better.

The D6 really IS the trick to getting the missing low-end "cabinet thunk" particularly on emulations, but used on a (real) amp direct it's more like a punch in the ribcage...LOVE it.

Absolutely. But like anything that dangerous, one must use caution so there isn't too much low end cancellation in the other instruments.
When I first started applying the 3rd mic (D6) I was fucking tickled. But it did tend to eat up and dominate a lot of lows when the chunking began. It's easy to get carried away, (which I do on occasion).
You'll find out how much you'll need once you add the drums and bass. I try and hold back a bit on excessive high end sparkle and low end massiveness so there's something to work with in the mastering process.
I do my final mixes to -5db so what ever needs to be done in mastering has some space to work with...

All good things to know. The thing that's cracking me up about the recent success with the Boogie tracks this week (did more yesterday) is I haven't even gotten to adding the 57 and D6 emulations to 2 out of the 3 tracks yet and they're all sounding huge already. I also went back and switched over anything I'd tracked with the 121 edge 1 emulation to the edge 4, really makes things jump out. As I'd mentioned, I've also been doing a lot of this with my Purple Strat with the Virtual Vintage stacked single-coils, and the Boogie's "Marshall"/"Brown" rhythm channel; and I'm A ) Really surprised by how good it sounds (not exactly like a Plexi, or even a JCM800, but nice similarly-flavored mid-gain AC/DC growl) with the Strat for power chords and adding that glassy percussive thing humbuckers don't give you and B ) I've managed to pull it off when my neighbors aren't around, because much like it's namesake that channel doesn't start happening until the power tubes get involved, so I had to goose the room level a bit...

But what's your favorite emulation for the 57?

I find the EL 34 - 57 grill works pretty cool in combination. Tight with good upper range definition.

                      Holy fuckballs!

Oh, snap! New version out 1/18 is a stand-alone plug-in, and has stereo capability! Wants!

Audio plugins for a new breed. VST, AU, and AAX format plugins for Mac and Windows. Our products include True Iron, KClip, Synth Warmer, and more.

Funny, because I was already thinking about trying running the second stereo send off my Line 6 DL-4 (last thing in line in the loop) on my pedalboard to the 2nd input on my Mbox and recording quasi-stereo tracks w/ the Boogie anyway, now I can do that and (if that video is any indication) just throw on something like the "Feared" combo preset!

Hmm, wonder in either of those scenarios how would one add the D6 emulation of each cabinet to the mix, enough to get the cabinet "thunk" thing going? Could do mono tracks of the blended cab sound, or of them individually...

Interesting...just looked at the list of mics in version 3 and the D6 mic emulation seems to have been omitted! I mean, I'll still have it in the version 2 IR library on my HD, and can still pull it up on the MellowMuse IR1A convolution-loader I'm currently using, mix the old and new versions...
