Dashon Goldson is a Buccaneer. A rich Buccaneer.

Per a source with knowledge of the contract, Goldson’s five-year deal has a total value of $41.25 million, with $22 million guaranteed.

Some of you have asked an astute question. Does a big deal for Goldson leave enough cash and cap space for a possible Darrelle Revis trade?

It does. We’re told that the contract has a favorable structure in the first two years, leaving more than enough room for a new Revis deal.

Of course, the Jets first have to trade Revis to Tampa. But signing Goldson doesn’t take the Bucs out of play for Revis.

After six seasons with the New England Patriots, Wes Welker is leaving for the Denver Broncos.

Welker and the Broncos agreed to terms on a two-year contract today, Broncos front office boss John Elway announced.

In his six seasons in New England, Welker was consistently one of the NFL’s best wide receivers, catching more than 110 passes in five different seasons. He was also a fan favorite and a favorite of his teammates, and there was a great deal of talk in New England that one way or another, he and the team would find a way to get a deal done.

But it didn’t happen. Welker and the Patriots disagreed on what kind of contract he was worth, and when Welker was still available 24 hours into free agency, the Broncos swooped in and made him the deal he was working for.

Now Welker leaves one AFC title contender for another, and leaves Tom Brady for Peyton Manning.

The Titans have landed a bruising inside runner to complement Chris Johnson.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that the Titans and Jets free agent running back Shonn Greene have come to terms on a three-year, $10 million contract.

Greene, who seems certain to be the Titans’ top reserve back, ranks No. 94 in PFT’s free agent rankings.

Greene, 28, has exceeded 1,000 yards rushing in each of the last two seasons for the Jets, getting more than 250 carries in each of those campaigns. He would figure to get less work in Tennessee, but he could serve a couple important purposes for the Titans as a solid short-yardage and late-game option.

The Cardinals have added another competitor to a crowded group at quarterback.

Drew Stanton, formerly the Colts’ backup quarterback, signed a three-year contract with Arizona, agent Mike McCartney said Wednesday.

Stanton didn’t play in a regular-season game with Indianapolis a season ago, but he did work with then-Colts offensive coordinator / interim head coach Bruce Arians.

Now, Stanton will reunite with Arians.

With Stanton joining the mix, the Cardinals have five quarterbacks: Stanton, Brian Hoyer (a restricted free agent), Kevin Kolb, John Skelton and Ryan Lindley. Clearly, they won’t be keeping all of them.

Since Jim Schwartz moved from Titans defensive coordinator to Lions head coach, several players have followed him to Detroit.

Now one is moving the other direction. Defensive tackle Sammie Hill has agreed to a three-year deal with the Titans. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the deal is worth $11.4 million, with $4 million in guaranteed money.

Hill’s move to Tennessee was forecast on Tuesday night as reports indicated he was likely to wind up with the Titans after he made his way to Nashville for a visit with the team. Hill’s a big guy who’s shown some promise as a pass rusher as a rotational player with the Lions, but the Titans will likely be asking him to do more if, as expected, Sen’Derrick Marks moves on to another team.

Hill is the third free agent that the Titans have signed since free agency opened. He joins guard Andy Levitre and tight end Delanie Walker as new faces on a Titans team trying to find its way back to the playoffs.

One of the strange parts of this offseason has been watching the Cowboys and Redskins watch from the sidelines, because of the salary cap penalties the league dropped on them.

Now, the Cowboys have dropped one of their own for a little room.

According to Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com, the Cowboys have decided to release defensive end Marcus Spears.

The former first-rounder will be designated a post-June 1 cut, allowing them to spread the cap hit out. He clears around $2 million in room this year, though they don’t get credit for it until the summer. Realistically, that’s part of the cap room they’ll need to sign draft picks.

Spears was also vaguely extraneous with the Cowboys move to a 4-3, as he’s a natural defensive end in a 3-4.

The Cardinals will release free safety Kerry Rhodes, a league source told PFT’s Mike Florio on Wednesday.

Per Rotoworld.com financial figures, Rhodes was slated to make $5.5 million in 2013 ($4.5 million in salary, $1 million in bonus).

Rhodes, 30, notched 67 tackles and intercepted four passes in 2012 for Arizona.

The Cardinals will have new starters at both safety spots in 2013. Last week, they parted ways with long-time strong safety Adrian Wilson.

Before Wes Welker agreed to terms on a two-year, $12 million deal with the Broncos, a source with knowledge of the market told PFT that slot receivers are “getting screwed.”

Also feeling the turning of the screws is free-agent receiver Danny Amendola. Per the source, Amendola’s offers on the open market are coming in lower than what the Rams had offered.

If that trend continues, Amendola could end up back in St. Louis.

And now that Welker has gotten only $12 million over two years, the Patriots and others can put the screws to Amendola even more.

Patriots, Danny Amendola agree to five-year, $31 milliondeal

The loss of Wes Welker created a need at receiver for the Patriots, and they didn’t take long to fill it.

The Patriots have reached an agreement on a five-year, $31 million deal with receiver Danny Amendola, with $10 million guaranteed, a source tells PFT.

Amendola was widely thought to be a target for the Patriots, whose offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, had previously coached him in St. Louis. Amendola’s familiarity with McDaniels could make him a quick study in New England’s passing game.

Still, there are questions about Amendola’s durability — he has played in only 12 games in the last two seasons — and Amendola has never had the kind of production that Welker had. Amendola’s career best season was 85 catches for 689 yards in 2010; Welker has had five different seasons with more than 110 catches and more than 1,100 receiving yards.

But Welker is done in New England. And Tom Brady will have the next six months to develop a rapport with Amendola before the season starts.

Seahawks make splash on defense with Cliff Avrildeal

The quiet has ended for Cliff Avril.

According to Albert Breer of the NFL Network, the Lions pass-rusher has agreed to a new deal with the Seahawks. He’s en route to the Pacific Northwest, and will sign his deal when he arrives.

The addition is huge for the Seahawks, whose defense changed when defensive end Chris Clemons blew out his knee in the playoff win over the Redskins.

Adding Avril gives them a solid pass-rush presence, the same kind of boost they gave their offense with the trade for Percy Harvin.

Not sure why they didn't just pay Welker, doesn't make a lot of sense to me. That said, IF (its a big if) Amendola can stay relatively healthy the Pats could look like geniuses.

    Thursday morningone-liners

With the days and nights and rumors and stories becoming a blur during the start of free agency, it’s good to catch up. So here’s a look at what you might have missed yesterday:

The Bills paired Mario Williams up with his former college teammate.

Dolphins CB Sean Smith hasn’t generated much notice so far.

The Patriots made up for losing Wes Welker by throwing a pile of money at Danny Amendola.

Until they pull the trigger on a Darrelle Revis trade, the Jets seem to be doing bargain shopping.

With the Ravens sending more and more players out the door than in, some are wondering if chemistry issues led to Bernard Pollard’s release.

The Bengals watched some players leave, but Vontaze Burfict saw a nice check arrive in the mail.

The Browns lowered their sights after making a splash with Paul Kruger and Desmond Bryant, finding lower-priced contributors on offense and defense.

The Steelers brought hometown-boy Bruce Gradkowski back to improve their backup QB situation.

The Texans lost safety Glover Quin, but brought Ed Reed for a visit as a possible replacement.

Signing LaRon Landry was the latest aggressive move for the Colts, who have signed half a depth chart this week.

The most significant thing the Jaguars did yesterday might have been sending a large contingent to watch Geno Smith throw.

The Titans brought in more line help, bringing Sammie Lee Hill to Tennessee.

Broncos bossman John Elway’s becoming a free agent closer, but he knows who’s really in charge.

After adding two quarterbacks on the first day of the league year, the Chiefs are trying to pawn Matt Cassel off on someone.

While far from household names, the Raiders made three capable additions to their defense.

The Chargers convinced Derek Cox to blow off a visit to the Saints.

The Cowboys still aren’t buying, as they’re still in the process of clearing out cap room.

The Giants moved on from K Lawrence Tynes rather than give him a big, long-term deal.

New Eagles DT Isaac Sopoaga vowed to “shock the world,” which his new team has done recently, actually.

The Redskins lost one of their own when they reduced their offer at the last minute.

If the Bears aren’t paying enough attention to Brian Urlacher, maybe a chat with the Vikings will make them notice.

The white limo treatment worked for the Lions, who landed RB Reggie Bush.

The Packers are still interested in RB Steven Jackson, but at a certain price.

In other divisional poaching news, the Vikings are bringing WR Greg Jennings in for a visit.

The Falcons have been quiet since hanging onto their own on day one.

Needing some degree of veteran presence in the secondary, the Panthers brought in CB Drayton Florence.

The Saints aren’t doing anything yet, but they are sniffing around the big names.

The Buccaneers did what the 49ers wouldn’t, pay S Dashon Goldson.

The Cardinals are buying in bulk, which may not be the worst idea.

The Rams might end up with Jake Long, but premature reports of an agreement came before he was finished with his physical.

The 49ers are in on the Nnamdi Asomugha chase.

The Seahawks found the pass-rusher they needed, getting DE Cliff Avril on the (relative) cheap.

    Greg Jennings visiting theVikings

Free agent receiver Greg Jennings may be leaving Green Bay but staying in the NFC North.

Jennings is visiting the Vikings today, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

The Vikings have been widely reported to be interested in Jennings, especially after they traded away Percy Harvin and needed to pick up a playmaker in their passing game. Jennings would add an element to Minnesota’s offense that’s currently missing. The Vikings know first-hand how good Jennings can be; his best game last year was an eight-catch, 120-yard, two-touchdown performance in Minnesota.

    Falcons, Steven Jackson agree toterms

When the Falcons released running back Michael Turner, Steven Jackson was believed to be their choice to replace him.

It took a couple days and some rumored interest from the Packers, but the Falcons got their man. Adam Schefter of ESPN broke the news that Jackson and the Falcons have agreed to terms on a contract that will bring the NFL’s leading active rusher to Atlanta.

Jackson’s a clear upgrade on Turner and he’s been a strong receiver throughout his career, something that could add another wrinkle to a Falcons offense that looks even better than the one that helped them to the NFC Championship Game last year. With Tony Gonzalez coming back, the Falcons appear to be loading up for a run at the Super Bowl.

They’ll need to do some work on defense to get there, namely a pass rusher to replace the departed John Abraham and some secondary help whether or not they bring back Brent Grimes. Jackson’s a big get for them, though, and should be a very good fit in an offense that could have used his skills last season.

Saints sign Keenan Lewis to five-yeardeal

Free agent cornerback Keenan Lewis is heading home to New Orleans.

Lewis, a New Orleans native who has played his entire four-year career with the Steelers, signed a five-year deal with the Saints today.

After starting all 16 games for the Steelers last season, Lewis became one of a large group of starting cornerbacks to hit the free agent market this year. We had him as the No. 41 player available in our free agent rankings.

The Saints were known to be looking for an upgrade at cornerback, and now they’ve got their man.

Eagles sign Kenny Phillips and CaryWilliams

The Eagles announced that they have added safety Kenny Phillips and cornerback Cary Williams to the group of five players they signed on the first day of free agency. It’s a three-year deal for Williams, who becomes the latest member of the Super Bowl-winning Ravens defense to leave the team since the start of free agency. The Eagles have lost both of their starting corners from last year and Williams seems a strong bet to take one of those jobs next season.

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports that Williams’ deal is worth a total of $17 million with $10.5 million in guarantees. Both of those numbers come in slightly below Sean Smith’s deal with the Chiefs, although Williams reportedly has incentives that can kick the total higher.

Phillips and the Eagles have a lot of familiarity with each other from Phillips’ years with the Giants. He signed a one-year deal after dealing with knee injuries that limited him to just seven games during the 2012 season. He’s been a very good player when healthy, though, and would give the Eagles a big boost if he can remain that way all year. Those with long memories will remember that we once said the same thing about former Giants wide receiver Steve Smith when he signed in Philly before the 2011 season.

It’s a risk worth taking for a team that got little from their safeties last season, though. With Patrick Chung and Bradley Fletcher also in the fold, the Eagles have clearly prioritized improvements in the secondary early in Chip Kelly’s first offseason.

    Lions left tackle Jeff Backusretires

Jeff Backus, a Lions left tackle who has been one of the NFL’s most durable and consistent players since entering the league 12 years ago, has decided to call it a career.

The Lions announced on Thursday that Backus has retired.

Backus was the Lions’ first-round draft pick in 2001 and was immediately given the most important job on the offensive line, the starting left tackle position. He started every game that year, and every game every year until finally missing one game with an injury in 2012. In 12 seasons he started 191 of the Lions’ 192 regular-season games, as well as the Lions’ one and only playoff game of the last 12 years.

The departure of Backus is one more reminder that the 2013 Lions will be a very different team from the 2012 Lions. Detroit has made several significant personnel changes on both sides of the ball this offseason, and now one of the Lions’ most reliable mainstays is walking away, at the age of 35.

Matt Cassel makes quick move toVikings

The Vikings knew they needed a better second option at quarterback, so they didn’t want to wait.

According to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Vikings have apparently secured a deal with former Chiefs starter Matt Cassel.

The pace of the move underlines just how seriously they wanted someone better than Joe Webb behind Christian Ponder, and how much competition there was for Cassel.

After the beating he took in Kansas City, he’s also not the kind of guy who would be bucking for the starting job, old enough to know his role behind Ponder and not create pressure

    Colts reel in Ricky JeanFrancois

Ricky Jean Francois left Philadelphia without a contract.

He won’t be leaving Indianapolis without one. Just after Colts owner Jim Irsay promised news of a big new signing, Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com scooped him by reporting that the former 49ers defensive lineman had agreed to a four-year, $22 million deal with the team.

There’s no word on guarantees or how the contract breaks down, but it’s a pretty nice contract for a player who has been a reserve for the 49ers throughout his career. He’s done a good job in the role and filled in well for Justin Smith when Smith was injured in the second half of last season, but he’ll still be asked to play the lion’s share of snaps for the first time in his career.

Jean Francois played all over the line for the 49ers so we’ll have to wait and see exactly how Chuck Pagano plans to use him up front for the Colts in 2013. Defensive end would be the most logical spot, but the Colts are adding players quickly so things could wind up differently.

Steelers have Beanie Wells in for aphysical

The Cardinals signed Rashard Mendenhall as a free agent this week to close a hole at running back that opened when they released Beanie Wells.

Mendenhall’s departure left the Steelers with an opening of their own in the backfield. Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers started looking into options to fill their opening by bringing Wells in for a physical this week.

Wells’ knees have given him plenty of problems and there were reports out of Arizona that the Cardinals thought his right knee would continue to be troublesome in the future. We don’t know what the doctors in Pittsburgh found during their examination, but Wells hasn’t signed with the team so there could be concerns on the Steelers part as well.

Or they could just be waiting to see who else might become an option for them at running back as free agency progresses while keeping Wells in their back pocket until the time comes for them to revisit that option.

From the Cowgirls will be lucky to hit. 500 files.........

It was strange, to say the least, to see that the Cowboys had struck a deal with a free agent whom they don’t have the cap space to sign. But that’s what happened Tuesday, with the news that linebackerJustin Durant will eventually sign a contract with the Cowboys, once the Cowboys clear enough cap space to absorb Durant’s deal.

Until then, Durant remains a free agent. Any other team that wants to sign him can try. And if a team offers more money than the Cowboys have ponied up, maybe Durant will walk away.

The Cowboys surely would be upset if Durant reneges. But they’d have no right to be. Basically, they’re trying to expand their salary cap by squatting on Durant at a time when they have barely $100,000 left to spend. If they want to nail him down to an enforceable contract, they need to create the cap space.

This gives even more leverage to the players whose deals Dallas is trying to extend. Whether it’s defensive endAnthony Spencer or quarterbackTony Romo or someone else, the Cowboys now have added urgency to create cap space, given the possibility that Durant will move on.

Not long after reports emerged that the Browns had signed quarterbackJason Campbell the Browns announced the move.
“Jason is an established leader who has started a number of games in this league and has had success,” coach Rob Chudzinski said in a release issued by the team. “He brings us a veteran presence and a good set of physical tools. He played in a similar system when he was in Oakland and that will help in his transition.”

“We are excited to have Jason as a member the Cleveland Browns,” Browns CEO Joe Banner said. “He is a veteran player who has been productive throughout his career and will be a good addition to our team.”

The release makes no mention of whether Campbell will compete for the starting job, whether he will be given the starting job, or whether he will serve as the backup toBrandon Weeden. Regardless, he’s the first new quarterback acquired this year by a team with a new owner, new CEO, new G.M., and new coach.

Steven Jackson is 29 with 9 full NFL seasons under his belt . Maybe 29 is considered " old " by some NFL standards but , he was relatively injury - free with no signs of slowing down . 10,000 plus career rushing yards in 9 seasons is nothing to sneeze at .

The Lions quickly moved to secure an experienced replacement for retiring placekicker Jason Hanson, agreeing to terms with ex-49er David Akers, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported Friday evening.

The 38-year-old Akers comes off his worst season as a pro; he missed a career-high 13 field goals in 42 regular-season attempts for NFC champion San Francisco. It was a surprising form reversal for Akers; the previous season, he connected on 44-of-52 field goals and set the single-season NFL points record (166). The 49ers released Akers in March, replacing him with former Browns kicker Phil Dawson.

Akers’ overall track record is solid. He has hit at least 82 percent of his field goals in nine of the last 13 seasons — all while playing his home games outdoors for the 49ers and Eagles. By contrast, the Lions could play as many as 10-of-16 regular-season games in 2013 in climate-controlled settings — eight home contests at Detroit’s Ford Field, one game at the domed Mall of America Field in Minneapolis and another at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., which has a retractable roof.

Akers, who is entering his 16th NFL season, had 40 of his 87 kickoffs go for touchbacks in 2012.

The Jaguars and wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi have agreed to a deal, the club confirmed Friday.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Massaquoi received a two-year contract.

Massaquoi, 26, has played the last four seasons in Cleveland. In 2012, he caught 17 passes for 254 yards in nine games and dealt with hamstring and knee ailments. Injuries have been an issue for him in the last two seasons, and he had multiple concussions in his Cleveland career.

However, if Massaquoi is healthy, he could improve the Jaguars’ wideout depth behind Cecil Shorts and Justin Blackmon. Massaquoi, who has made 43 starts, has gained 14.8 yards per catch since entering the NFL in 2009.

Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union first reported the Massaquoi agreement.

The Panthers’ perpetual search for complementary receivers has led them to a player new general manager Dave Gettleman is familiar with.

According to Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com, former Giants wideout Domenik Hixon has agreed to terms with the Panthers, after interest from the Browns.

Hixon could step into the third wideout role vacated when former Panthers wideout Louis Murphy took his spare-part job with the Giants.

The Panthers also added Ted Ginn this offseason, giving them plenty of experienced competition for a young group with no sure things beyond starters Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell.

From the "how is this guy still in the NFL" files..............

Rex Grossman’s three-year tenure with the Redskins will continue.

Grossman, a first-round pick of the Bears way back in 2003, has re-signed with a team that may soon have four quarterbacks under contract.

A 13-game starter in 2011, Grossman made no appearances in 2012, following the arrival of rookies Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins. Multiple reports indicate that the Redskins also will sign Pat White, which would give them two mobile quarterbacks and a pair of pocket passers.

They may need one more quarterback for offseason workouts and training camps, given Griffin’s recovery from a torn ACL.

Kevin Kolb: 'I've Always Dreamed Of Playing For The Bills Since I Was Released By The Cardinals And Had No Other Options'
    Sports News in Brief • sports • ISSUE 49•15 • Apr 10, 2013

BUFFALO, NY—After signing a two-year contract with the team, quarterback Kevin Kolb revealed Wednesday that he has always dreamt of playing for the Buffalo Bills from the moment he was cut by the Arizona Cardinals and had absolutely no other alternatives. “Ever since I can remember being a free agent without a shred of interest from any other teams, I’ve always wanted to wear that Bills uniform,” said Kolb, adding that he leapt at the opportunity as soon as he heard the Bills were the sole NFL franchise willing to employ him following his disappointing stint with the Cardinals. “To finally be where I’ve dreamed of playing since back when I was told by my agent that the Bills were my only shot at continuing my NFL career—it is really a dream come true.” Reached for comment, Bills head coach Doug Marrone told reporters he had always hoped to work with Kolb, dating back to the first time he realized the six-year veteran was the only quarterback the team could get.
