Gaetz Removes McCarthy From House Speaker Roll

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy ousted from leadership role in historic vote. Here's what to know.
Enough Republicans joined Matt Gaetz’s effort in a pair of floor votes.

Updated Tue, October 3, 2023 at 11:37 AM EDT·3 min read

Rep. Matt Gaetz’s efforts to oust Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy were successful Tuesday as the GOP civil war continues to rage in Congress. It was the first time in U.S. history that a House speaker was voted out of the position.

Gaetz, the outspoken Florida Republican who’s dealt with a barrage of scandals since being elected in 2016, has been a consistent antagonist of McCarthy. On Monday night, Gaetz announced he would be filing a “motion to vacate” that, if successful, would remove McCarthy from his post.

McCarthy and his allies could have handled Gaetz’s motion in a few ways, but they chose to hold a vote to “table” it on Tuesday afternoon. If it had been successful, it would have killed Gaetz’s motion and allowed McCarthy to retain his speakership. It failed, with 11 Republicans defecting.

Later that afternoon a final vote passed, ending McCarthy’s speakership. Eight Republicans joined with 208 Democrats in support of the measure. To close out the proceedings, Rep. Steve Womack of Arkansas, who was presiding over the House, said, "The office of Speaker of the House of the United States House of Representatives is hereby declared vacant."

Gaetz defended his actions in a speech prior to the final vote, saying, “Chaos is Speaker McCarthy. Chaos is somebody who we cannot trust with their word.”

McCarthy could run again for the now vacant speakership, something his allies have suggested is likely.

    Gaetz’s case against McCarthy

    Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Gaetz’s move came after McCarthy agreed over the weekend to support a funding bill that averted a government shutdown. On Monday, Gaetz also accused him of cutting a “secret deal” with Democrats to fund Ukraine’s military in its fight with Russia. Gaetz and other hard-liners object to such funding.

The Florida congressman has also accused McCarthy of spinelessness, saying the speaker loses his “lunch money in every negotiation” with the White House.

McCarthy, meanwhile, has insisted that Gaetz’s issue with him is “personal” and has little to do with politics or policy. Speaking to reporters Tuesday morning, McCarthy attempted to project confidence, citing the other challenges he had overcome during his rocky leadership tenure and posting "Bring it on" to social media.

McCarthy could have negotiated with Democrats for their support in order to guarantee that he kept the position, but he did not, telling CNBC Tuesday morning that Democrats will “decide whatever they’re going to do. And we will live with whatever happens.” Gaetz, however, reached out to Democrats to try and ensure their votes against McCarthy.

After a lengthy Democratic caucus meeting on Tuesday morning, the party’s leadership said it would not be voting to step in to help McCarthy and centrist Democrats abandoned him as well. There was little love for him among the minority party, following his launch of an impeachment inquiry into President Biden without a floor vote and his defense of former President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

    What comes next

Following plans put in place in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks to ensure the continuance of governance, McCarthy had prepared a “speaker-in-waiting” list from which an interim replacement would be chosen. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, a McCarthy ally, was selected for the role.

There are disagreements on how much power McHenry will actually have, however, with some procedural experts saying that a replacement would only have the power to oversee the selection of a new speaker. The position doesn’t have to be held by a sitting member of Congress.

McCarthy struggled to corral his Republican colleagues since the onset of his speakership. It took a historic 15 votes over five days to install him in the position.

I don't know the details on this but I will say over here any time conservatives bow down to their right wing it never makes them happy. The more you compromise with those people the more they want.

We have the most right wing prime minister in the UK in living memory and it's just made his party go further right again and now they are plotting to get rid of him for not being completely crazy.

Yes, it's true that he will not try to get Speakership back.

By the way, I love that Gaetz looks like Butthead. Pity Butthead is much smarter.

    Indeed.

And in the States, the Repubs wonder why they KEEP losing elections. Until they cut this alt-right insanity out of their party, it will continue to drag them down even further.

The Dems now effectively own the House despite being in the narrow minority. Gaetz will probably be thrown off committees after this and he might be reelected but will be put out eventually...

McCarthy said something about Gaetz having "personal problems in his life" earlier today. So we'll see what comes out of this...

So if Gaetz is Butthead, then who is Beavis? Probably the pedo-enabling Gym Jordan?

    McCarthy was very obviously Stewart.

Ha! Legally Trump could become House Speaker but it’s no benefit to him. The MAGA nuts would love it but they would make him king if they could pull it off.

It’s entertaining as hell watching all these corrupt cunts point the finger at each other but they all are pigs eating from the same trough. We truly have the best government bribery and blackmail can get you. We haven’t reached the point where one general knocks off the previous one but give it time.

Cheeto wouldn't want to be Speaker because he would have to actually show up for the job. Not sit in his pajamas and watch FAUX Noize on TV until noon like he did in the White House.

Of course, if this unholy nightmare did happen, every last stinking treasonous MAGAtt would be aiming their AR-15s at Biden & Harris trying to give the Orange fuck an instant promotion to pResident... since he's got no chance in Hell of getting that job through an actual election again.

I remember when I studied Constitutional Law (it's called public law here) it was boring as fuck and the most recent thing that had happened was a hundred years ago - nowadays it's every other week some new shit going down.

    Ironically always from the conservatives...

Democrats voted to remove the House Speaker as well. It wasn’t just Republicans. Ah things get active when corruption goes unchecked too long. If you think it’s a freak show now just wait.

Frankly everyone is responsible for the situation we are in. Everyone has some blame and pointing fingers accomplishes nothing. Kicking the can down the road for 79 years and letting corruption fester and letting people grift in office their whole lives eventually takes you to a very bad place.

Right! Which is hysterical as Gaetz' stated motivation was that McCarthy cooperated with Dems to pass the gov't funding bill to avoid the Shutdown. So he of course and 8 Republican extremists roll with Democrats to toss him.

This after McCarthy essentially helped Gaetz by allowing him to sit on committees and ignored his penchant for fucking underage girls and using drugs..

Trump won't attempt to get in on the Speaker of the House job... but he'll let the news cycles keep him in the current headlines which is free campaign air-time that costs him nothing and takes attention off some of his legal battles.

Its difficult to glean anything positive from this Speaker move on either side. Just fodder for more shit slinging... as there's wasn't plentiful around already. Personally, it's disgusting bullshit and my investments are taking a beating in a crappy economy. That sucks for all...

Pretty much. My real estate investments are still doing well. This area is still booming. Glad I didn’t buy stocks.

Can't blame the Dems for letting this play out for the most part...

The concerning aspect is the position of Speaker is the third highest ranked position within the republic's power structure and succession hierarchy. That's not a trivial role to be playing games with. A large majority... call it the middle of the political spectrum, of the nation are not laughing and the serious impact of this has a huge potential of causing more harm than good for the nation at a time where we really don't need more bullshit...

This would be the best thing to happen to both parties. This archaic two party system needs to be blown to smithereens. It's ridiculous in this day and age, we are forced to pick one of only two pathetic choices. I cannot believe we are a quarter of the way into the 21st century, and we still only have two choices. Sure, we can vote for others, but there is no realistic way in hell anyone other than one of the two crooked parties is going to win. But, I guess libtard led by the nose sheep like Nickdcantthinkforhimself are the exact reason why.

I couldn't agree more, I've always thought we need at least four parties to govern as coalitions rather than two infighting Reds vs. Blues vs. other Blues and Reds. A fifth centrist party would be great. I think the argument is that two parties keeps things more stable but it's getting harder and harder to make that argument...

Pure and simple... money is keeping this 2 party goat rodeo going. Find a way to shift enough money out of red & blue and a new party will rise.

I think the Democrats had it in for McCarthy and saw him as a bad-faith bargainer that had burned Biden and the House minority leadership reneging several times, they also maybe hoping the "Freedom Caucus" has enough rope to hang itself by alienating people with their fringe batshit stuff and gain a majority in the next two cycles...

So it's him or the white supremacist douche?

Again you have the nutjob minority running everything. Why can't they find someone who isn't who 10 or 20 Dems can vote for?

Don't forget Jordan aided and abetted male-rape as a wrestling coach:

    CNN https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/06/polit...nvs/index.html

Tito Vazquez says he still remembers the day three decades ago when, as a wrestler at Ohio State University, the doctor he’d gone to see about a bloody nose insisted on examining his genitals. He also recalls how one of his coaches dismissed his immediate complaint.

“‘I have nothing to do with this,’” Vazquez quoted the assistant coach saying, as he effectively ended the conversation and went on with wrestling practice.

That coach, Vazquez says, was Jim Jordan, now an Ohio congressman and an influential voice in Republican politics, perhaps best known for his pugnacious defense of President Donald Trump during the recent impeachment proceedings.

Vazquez is one of six former OSU wrestlers who told CNN in recent interviews that they were present when Jordan heard or responded to sexual misconduct complaints about team doctor Richard Strauss. Eight others say Strauss’ inappropriate behavior was an open secret in the athletic department and that Jordan, among others, must have known about it.

What Jordan and other coaches knew, and when they knew it, has been under scrutiny since 2018, when OSU announced an investigation into the allegations against Strauss. An independent report commissioned by the university concluded last year that Strauss “sexually abused at least 177 male student-patients” between 1979 and 1998. The doctor died by suicide in 2005.:

So to get this straight Jim Jordan is the head of the 'Freedom' caucus which is maybe 20% of the Republican members and so about 10% of the overall members of the House. I don't understand the math of this and the exact same thing happened in the UK except here the far right call themselves the European Research Group with similar numbers.

Have you noticed how these people always name themselves after what they are actually against - authoritarians always with the freedom BS.

Or "libertarians" that want smaller gov't for them, more for you. More economic rights but less reproductive freedom, books in libraries, gays, democracy, etc...

Yes, the "freedom" to finally gut Social Security, pensions, 401ks, HSAs, even one personal savings never mind education and to fully criminalize abortion. Republicans will not stop until they have the "freedom" to loot the Department of Treasury, instill a fascistic government and impose a dictatorship.

It's exactly what the MAGA voters want.

I think I was gonna post here that probably 90% of Republicans in the House think Donald Trump is a fucking retarded asshole but will never admit that for political suicide reasons. I doubt they think much more of Jim (let that fag Dr. touch your balls!) Jordan. But these debutant pussies are afraid of the MAGA-unwashed masses...

Good news is that it won't be Pedo Gym Jordan. Now for the bad news.......

    rollcall.com
Scalise wins GOP nomination for speaker - Roll Call
    Peter Cohn

House Republicans selected Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., as the party’s nominee for speaker behind closed doors Wednesday morning — though questions remain if Scalise will be able to secure the 217 votes needed to win the position on the floor.

Scalise defeated House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, paving the way for floor action as early as Wednesday afternoon, lawmakers leaving the GOP conference meeting said. The vote was 113-99, according to Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.

Scalise would replace the former speaker, Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who was stunningly removed from his role by eight Republicans and all House Democrats after Florida Republican Matt Gaetz filed a motion to vacate the speaker position last week.

It was the second vote in Scalise’s favor Wednesday, after an effort to raise the threshold for the conference to select a speaker was tabled.

[Scalise bid for speaker role follows nine years in House Republican leadership]

Reps. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., introduced a measure that would have required the party’s selection for speaker to receive 217 votes in conference before moving to the floor.

That attempt was rejected on a 135-88 vote.

While proponents of that measure argued that it would save the party from a repeat of the messy floor fight that ended in McCarthy’s January election, opponents believed it would stretch out the election and empower any small group of members to make demands.

However, that dynamic is still in play on the floor, as Scalise can only afford to lose four Republican votes and still become speaker. Some Jordan backers, including Ohio’s Max Miller and Colorado’s Lauren Boebert, emerged from the conference meeting Wednesday saying they still planned to vote for Jordan on the floor.

Scalise, a former chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, served as the Republican whip in both the majority and minority from 2014 to his ascension to majority leader.

During the election, Scalise has focused on unifying the conference in his pitch. He’s also highlighted border security, fighting inflation and oversight of the Biden administration as top priorities of House Republicans.

Reps. Frank D. Lucas, R-Okla., Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa and John James, R-Michigan, gave the nominating speeches for Scalise.

Scalise will now have to wrangle 217 votes from a rowdy Republican conference, many of whom backed Jordan in the conference vote.

If he secures the votes necessary on the floor, Scalise will be undergoing treatment for blood cancer at the start of his speakership.

He announced his diagnosis in April and said he would be undergoing “several months” of treatment for the disease.

After receiving a briefing on the Israel situation earlier in the day Wednesday, Scalise said that would be his priority if elected speaker.

“It’s really, really important that this Congress get back to work,” Scalise said. “And the first order of business under Speaker Steve Scalise is going to be offering a strong resolution expressing support for Israel.”

Added Scalise: “We’ve got to get back to work today. We’re going to do that.”

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

not mentioned in the above article is the fact that Scalise once described HIMSELF as "David DuKKKe without the baggage"
