Can't get this stuff: Did DLR Know?

Did Dave know it was the end of his reunion when he wrote "Can't get this stuff no more"? Is there a hidden message behind the mysterious lyrics?

    Try and see:

"Can't Get This Stuff No More"
Got me a date with a supermodel. Ha ha ha > A high profile gig with VH
I know, I know I figured "Fuck it" > He decided to burry the hatchet.
Dinner at the hotel, champagne bottle > So it was back to being a rock star
Steak and potatoes, a feather in a bucket > It was what he was longing for

Tell me what is it we're pretendin'? >Are we gonna work together or not?
Not to know, and who needs proof? >It's obvious he's the butt of the joke for VH.
I don't need so much to remember > Why dwell on the past?
No, no. That's how it is, when you tell the truth > He has always stood his ground and told the truth. Not like the VH sisters.
    Woo!

How many times does somebody lie > Eddie in this case
'Til patience (Ahh-ahh-ahh) runs her course? > The fans are running out of patience
Keep that in mind, when we say goodbye > Eddie's fault
'Cuz you can't (Ahh-ahh-ahh) get this stuff no more > Thanks to Ed once more.

That's the thing about self-improvement >Gotta always renew yourself
Don't get me wrong, I plan on gettin' some soon >Brought back his solo career
Outside the wire somethin's movin' >yeah, the rumors were big and the VH sisters were pissed.
The barn burnt down now I can see the moon >He saw right thru those suckers.

A slice at a time, like a pizza pie >Baby steps.
You (Ahh-ahh-ahh) serve up the truth, don't want it anymore
Keep that in mind, when we say goodbye
'Cuz you can't (Ahh-ahh-ahh) get this stuff no more

You have way too much free time on your hands.

Why do you fuckers feel the need to break shit down like poetry?

The God damn song was recorded in June......nothing bad happened until October.

this has been discussed so often...dave KNEW at some point what was going on...read the book...people were telling him that they already had cherone in the backhand when they worked with him...

I understand that Dave knew shit was going down....that doesn't mean that Can't Get This Stuff No More was worded the way it was.

I've read the book, about 7 times.

There is an interview with Dave himself somewhere on this site where he describes the song as such:

Can't Get This Stuff No More"
Got me a date with a supermodel. ...supermodel = VH
I know, I know I'm thinkin' "Fuck it" ...does he join VH?
Dinner at the hotel, champagne bottle ...they lure him in
Steak and potatoes, a feather in a bucket ...a supermodel eats steak and potatoes, then she throws it up in a fancy bucket. does he reject the band because he thinks they are using him?

Tell me what is it we're pretendin' ...we're pretending this is no big deal to the fans, but it is.
Not to know, and who needs proof?
I don't need so much to remember > Why dwell on the past?
No, no. That's how it is, when you tell the truth > He has always stood his ground and told the truth. Not like the VH sisters.

That's the thing about self-improvement ...reference to Eddie's gurus and therapysts and managers etc.
Don't get me wrong, I plan on gettin' some soon...sarcastically saying he is suspicious of the self improvement industry Eddie has let dominate his life - managers, therapists, brother etc. - like Brian Wilson
Outside the wire somethin's movin' - the legacy of VH is a barn, the sisters are outside pouring gasoline on it by tricking Dave.
The barn burnt down now I can see the moon...a slice at a time, like a pizza pie. - the truth reveals itself in increments.
You (Ahh-ahh-ahh) serve up the truth, don't want it anymore
Keep that in mind, when we say goodbye

I actually thought that this was a fairly thoughful interpretation.

Why would you say to someone who has taken the time to present something thoughtful "you have too much free time on your hands?"

Would you say that to a film critic? To an artist? Look at Dave: his life itself is about maximizing his free time: a voracious reader, he still takes martial arts lessons, studies additional languages, BECOMES AN EMT, and, oh, yeah, somehting somewhere about being a musician and artist. Besides, how are you spending your free time? Denigrating people on a fan web site for how they spend theirs?

As Dave has said in his book, outside people were talking to him all along about the VH situation. True, this was recorded and written long before the actual split, but don't think the '96 reunion was ANYTHING like their heyday. There was much more contact between Dave and VH's agent than between Dave and the brothers. (if you read the book, this'll explain the whole MTV debacle)

Looking at these lyrics now, I would agree that these are among the most sophisticated lyrics from Dave within a VH song (then again, VH was RARELY about sophisticated lyrics). These are more akin to material on YFLM - almost more singer-songwriterly than big bad rock star.

Nice work 5150. thanks for the read!

That's great, coming from a guy who could entertain himself with a rubberband for 3 hours.

Because he does....do you really think that's he's the only person in the last 8 years to notice that the lyrics coincide with the issues VH and Dave had in 1996....I think not.

He's just the only one who spent the time and effort to break down every single line in the song....I've been around this website and various mailing lists since 1996, and I'm sick of people breaking down situations and "hidden meanings" behind songs like this "American Literature 201."

I don't need to be told what Dave does in his free time. I left more VH/DLR knowledge in my toilet this morning that you will ever know.

You are right, I am spending my time denigrating people on a fan website, what the fuck is it to you?

Hey knuckle heads. I figured this out years ago, but I was recently thinking about it and wanted to share with you bunch of doosh bags (Excpetion from those that responded possitivly on this thread). I think this is Dave at his finest and we should celebrate it. Eddie is such an idiot he didn't even see that the lyrics were laughing at him. So the joke was on EDDIE and ALEX!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Guys, this is something like passover or something. We ought to celebrate Classic VH once a year and play this song as part of the ceremony or ritual and just chuckle as we see Dave using VH instead of them using him. This is got to be the biggest joke ever. The VH sisters are idiots and Dave proved it. He's a genious I tell ya....a genious.

PS - Steve - thanks for the interpretation. Took mine even further. Thanks.
