    This system will run ubuntu linux and maybe xp. Please tell me what you would change... I'm not a crazy gamer nor a vid editor (I dont need a 4800 x2). Suggestions plz! However, it has to be an amd sys and windows is a no no.

    Just a suggestion:

    Don't buy your hardware from a brick and mortar store, by the time they stock it, it's WAY outdated. And....

    AMD=GOOD

    WINDOWS=Mostly bad

    Your milage may vary

            Nice rig.

            Get it. Athlon 64 will beat the crap out of anything Apple has to offer.

            Not to mention PCI Express.

            I personally would go for a Western Digital or Maxtor hard drive, but that is up to you. I only say that because I have never had one die on me.

            Do not get that memory.

            Gigaram? Who the fuck is that?

            Go to the Abit website, and only get RAM that is approved for that board.
            Corsair is one of the best manufacturers, but even so...get something that is approved by ABIT.

            Oh, and if you are going to get 1GB of memory, get a pair of 512MB sticks so you can run them in dual channel mode (faster than a single stick in single-channel mode).

                      Dell sells average PCs, at best. Build your own, MERRYKISSMASS2U, you had the right idea and your choices were good. Hardrock69 gave great advice about the hard drive (however, WD would be my choice as I've had many problems with Maxtors in the past) and memory (buy only Abit approved RAM). I buy nVidia based video cards but ATI's technology has improved greatly over the past few years (especially for gaming - they were always the best for TV-out or dual-display) so your Sapphire card should be fine.
                      BTW, I've deployed hundreds of Dells in my office so I know what I'm talking about. They are simply just average machines and to get anything close from Dell you'll be paying more than $2k and it will still be a lesser machine than you've put together.

                      Best pre-built machines come from AlienWare (great gaming focus) or Eurocom (best laptops/desktop replacemens in the industry, IMHO)

                        A couple of years ago a friend of mine wanted to buy a PC to use for his new recording studio as a DAW (digital audio workstation).

                        He got several quotes from small companies that supposedly specialized in building these animals....they all quoted him in the range of 2000 bucks, and some of the components were substandard.

                        I told him where to find superior components and I built it for him (part of my sideline as a media/computer consultant).

                        He got a better, faster and more reliable machine than he could have bought already assembled for about 1500 bucks, labor included.

                        Oh and including a spare DVD-Rom drive for another comp he had.

                        Fuck Dell. I almost went to work as a customer support rep in their IT department.

                        Fortunately I did not.

                        When they gave me a tour of the call center, the reps that were all on the phone looked like they wanted to die, or like their sole goal in life was to become an axe-murderer.

                        Not too long afterwards, I found an online article about a guy who had worked for them for several years, and he had a lot to say.

                        90% of all Dell Customer Support reps have been there less than 6 months.

                        They are not allowed to think for themselves, even when they know the answer to the problem at hand. They still are required to follow the same carefully worded script.

                        On top of that, they are required to take a certain number of calls per hour, and are not allowed to spend more than a certain amount of time on a call before they are required to hand the call off to someone with more experience.

                        In many cases they are required to simply replace the hardware, even if it is fixable, simply to save time.

                        And that is just scratching the surface.

                        Good luck. If you buy all that stuff, you are going to have a fire-breathing monster.
