I've never had a problem with anything I've bought from Kingston. I've got 4 sticks of their 1Gb PC3200 RAM in my AMD64 machine right now. ASUS motherboard but overall a very similar machine to the one you're building.

PS - Thanks for mentioning Ubuntu. It's a Linux distro I'd never heard of (I've been a Fedora/RedHat user for 7-8 years). I downloaded it and am using it right now, in a VMWare virtual machine. Very nice, 5-star vote for you.

dude ubuntu is better than knoppix in terms of hardware detection. I love ubuntu. I think K(de)ubuntu sucks. The only thing i dont like about ubuntu is that clocks run verrry fast on amd64 machines.

Actually, I've never had a Debian Linux distribution that I've liked more than my normal RedHat/Fedora installations. Knoppix included. I was very impressed with Ubuntu's hardware detection. Since I downloaded it this morning I've successfully installed it in VMWare and MS VIrtual PC as well as a direct installation on a Dell laptop (no VM, full hard drive install). First time I've ever had that much success with a Linux installation, including RedHat/Fedora installations.
Again, I thank you for bringing it my attention.

Thanks for the tips. Are you recommending OpenPGP and Enigmail because of their improved encryption or because Evolution just sucks as a client?

                    Thanks, MKM2U.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with Alienware, DrMaddVibe. My best friend owns an Aurora ALX and he swears it's the bext machine he's ever owned. I've spent some time on it and was pretty impressed myself. I'd buy one but since I'm PC support specialist (one of the hats I wear) I insist on saving money by building my own machines. Between the two of us we've helped sell a dozen Alienware PCs and laptops and to the best of my knowledge everyone's happy. Ah, well, I guess everyone's experience is bound to be a little different. I'm just a little sad to hear someone has had problems.

                      Go for the Kingston memory.

I don't know if Infineon or Samsung are better as the "vendor", but the Kingston brand is up there with Corsair as one of the top brands,

I have a buddy who sells computer stuff to customers like alienware and for mil-related companies (solid state thousand dollar hdd's and shit). He frequently visits the AW complex in Miami, and he says it isnt as nice as you would expect.

There is only one stick of the bunch with faster timings, but it is the first one on the list, and is a company I never heard of.

So the above would be my choice out of the bunch.

IF you have to get a pc ( gaming errr.. etc )

def build yer own , then run linux or better yet os-x

                                that would be grate !

the main problem with pc's isn't the hardware

it's the shitty lame os that microsuck make
