Let's Trace it Back -- When Did Ed First Appear To Be Seriously Mentally Ill?

I'm curious to get peoples' thoughts about when Ed truly went insane.

It's now conventional wisdom that Ed is off his rocker; I think there are few who'd argue with that at this point.

Some would say Ed was always insane. I agree that yes, he's always been nuts in a rock and roll kind of way, but I think we can all remember when Ed's insanity was of the fun variety and not the pathetic, self-destructive, "I found the cure for cancer while bankrolling porno" variety. Up till 1996 or so, Ed was one of the more likeable dudes in rock. He smiled a lot. He used to look WAY younger than his age. And recall that Rolling Stone photo shoot with Val and Wolfie as a toddler -- homeboy looked downright happy. It's been a long way down from there.

I'll offer up the first time I thought, "This dude has LOST his mind." It was shortly after they put out III, during an appearance on the Howard Stern show. I watched the video of it. They were on the show early in the morning, and Ed wore really dark sunglasses. Ed walked in and presented Howard with a guitar, and a second later in a nasty tone said something like "If you make fun of me or my family I'll kill you." During the interview, Howard could barely keep Ed's attention, and Ed couldn't sit still. On the rare occasion Ed spoke, he sounded like a robot. He looked and acted like a paranoid crackhead.

Anyone know of anything like this earlier than 1998?

Shit. Back in the mid 80's. It was not by mistake why Roth put Ed in the straight jacket at the end of the Hot For Teacher video.

It was always Roth and Alex who did interviews and sometimes Mike. Ed was never there. I didn't even know what Ed's voice even sounded like until I met him in 1984.

He was this mysteriouse dude in those days and that just fueled more intrest in him.

I didn't really notice anything mentally odd about him until he started making oddball appearances during the post Cherone/pre Hagar era. I think it was about then that I seriously started wondering what planet he was from.

Yeah, but in the Roth years Dave did the talking and Edward was kept from the microphone. Maybe the dude was always a loose cannan but Dave and management were smart enough to keep EVH in the shadows until he had a guitar in his hand.

I thought it was in 1984 during the "Hot For Teacher" video. he is pictured as mentally ill and VH went to shit right after that.

He seemed to be in touch with reality throughout the whole 1996 debacle; even though I didn't care for what he had to say, the dude seemed sober enough. His playing sounded both focused and concise on that MTV Down Under 1998 Van Halen 3 thing.

I think after Van Halen 3 flopped and Cherone bailed, Ed just got hit up with too much shit at once; lost his third singer, his label dropped him, he had to deal with cancer, his wife bailed...just proved to be too much for him in the end. That's why he's spent the majority of his time since 1999 in hiding. Ed is running scared. Plus, it seemed like he was sober for about 5 years in the mid 1990s, but he's obviously drinking now......

                    Baaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh fuck him.

I think Ed has an oddball moment of clarity once in a while, but those moments are probably very few and far between. Realistically, that's the case with most drunkards, anyway, at least from personal experience. Even the most out-of-their-gourd alcoholics (of whom I've known a few) do have rational moments. Mostly delusional, of course, but there are times where you do get a logical exchange with them. Same could probably be said for Ed's mindset over, well, who knows how long really.

Yep. The difference is that 50+ year old brain and body can take a lot less alcoholic punisments than 20+ year old ones can. He's had bad habits all his life, but only in the last few years have they caught up with him.

I've always been inclined to say it was the cancer trip that really unleashed the mayhem on his mindset. There is the pre-cancer appearance on Stern to contradict this but in general, Ed's conduct in public pre-1999 was pretty much 'sane' and 'normal'. Certainly, he didn't go around wearing the same pair of boots with holes in them for 3 straight years and generally acting like the stinking drunk who sits down beside you on the bus as he does today.

I think there is a good argument to be made that he was always pretty much like this but it was just covered up better in the past and, as a younger man, his body and mind could bear the effects of the punishment he inflicted on himself better.

                            Bottoms up!

                              The 1st sign???

Prolly was when he and his brother were photographed wearing dresses way back as kids.

It only got worse when at the age of 12 he started smoking and drinking Schlitz Malt Liquor tallboys!

"Resting @ Bellvue" was the telling sign that Dave knew he was crazy.

I will say this though. of all the creative people I've ever known...they've all been off 1/2 a bubble. Creative forces in their perspective art, but just a couple cans short of a six-pack.

Call Dave Ed. Make it right. You're just wasting time. Make the good music again.
