I'm curious to get peoples' thoughts about when Ed truly went insane.
It's now conventional wisdom that Ed is off his rocker; I think there are few who'd argue with that at this point.
Some would say Ed was always insane. I agree that yes, he's always been nuts in a rock and roll kind of way, but I think we can all remember when Ed's insanity was of the fun variety and not the pathetic, self-destructive, "I found the cure for cancer while bankrolling porno" variety. Up till 1996 or so, Ed was one of the more likeable dudes in rock. He smiled a lot. He used to look WAY younger than his age. And recall that Rolling Stone photo shoot with Val and Wolfie as a toddler -- homeboy looked downright happy. It's been a long way down from there.
I'll offer up the first time I thought, "This dude has LOST his mind." It was shortly after they put out III, during an appearance on the Howard Stern show. I watched the video of it. They were on the show early in the morning, and Ed wore really dark sunglasses. Ed walked in and presented Howard with a guitar, and a second later in a nasty tone said something like "If you make fun of me or my family I'll kill you." During the interview, Howard could barely keep Ed's attention, and Ed couldn't sit still. On the rare occasion Ed spoke, he sounded like a robot. He looked and acted like a paranoid crackhead.
Anyone know of anything like this earlier than 1998?
