    Commit to not buying BoV2

Now, I haven't bought Diamond Dave yet, but I'd be willing to buy a copy or two the week BoV2 comes out. It would be funny to see Diamond Dave outsell Van Halen that week.

Damn, probably not enough copies of Diamond Dave in circuation for that to happen. Maybe we'd all have to buy another copy of VH1, but we'd all have to agree on the one title to potentially hit the charts for that week.

It could be a way for Dave and the Army to grab a headline. Let's organize a guerilla marketing campaign to get people onboard.

Anybody up for e-mailing buddies and being a marketing geek to get this done? Would you be in?

    Warner Bros press release:

"We don't know what the hell happened. Van Halen Best Of, Volume 2 hit the racks and we instead watched Van Halen One from 1978 go to #1 on the album charts this week. An internet group called the David Lee Roth Army is taking responsibility for the sales drive. Fans of Roth are making a statement."

I think there are a lot of people out there who wouldn't be caught dead posting at the Army, but miss Dave in VH.

You'd imagine a million of the 10 million people who bought 1984 might be alive and willing to spend $12.99 on another copy of VH1.

The trick is to mobilize these people through word-of-mouth, e-mail and maybe even picket signs outside Best Buy.

Hey, I'm a grassroots marketer who hangs out with a bunch of hippie activists. What else am I gonna come up with?

I'm not buying this new greatest hits album, unless there is new Dave material.

Not to naysay, but doubt there'd be enough hard-core, non-passive Roth maniacs to pull something like that off.

Diamond Dave sold, what, maybe 50-100,000 worldwide? Not enough fans willing to put their money where their mouth is.

I can't see Best Of Vol 2 doing all that well. About half a million bought Van Halen 3, and maybe 200,000 bought Sam Hagar's last solo record. Based on that (kind of a dubious logic, I know), Best Of Vol 2 might do around a million.

BOV1 did almost 3 million. Would be willing to bet most of that was people paying for the two new classic lineup tunes. Interest in the 1996 Roth reunion was intense. Can't say the same for this year's Van Hagar reunion.

If Halen put some new or previously unreleased Roth stuff on the BOV2 audio or video releases, I'll probably buy it. Otherwise, why bother?
