The article I saw about it asked "Since when does an extramarital affair disqualify you from ordering people killed for the CIA?" Then goes on to speculate the affair was likely with a staffer, a reporter, or perhaps a foreign national... something more...frowned upon than just the usual messing around on your wife.

Agreed. Nick, I don't think he's leaving his wife, though. He made the comment of how wrong as a husband and a CIA/D his affair was. We'll have to wait and see, though.

It's really only an issue if he's blackmail-able, and it looks like the object of his affections was essentially secure and had no ties to any foreign intelligence agency, which is the real issue of comprising oneself. I'm assuming the FBI probe essentially cleared them of any security threats or the compromising of his duties as the head of the agency...

The only speculation I saw (by Thomas Ricks who knows the military guys fairly well) that Obama didn't necessarily want him nor ask him to resign, at least not yet. But that Petraeus is coming from essentially the military Samurai Code of warrior (career) suicide after the discovery of impropriety...
