Giambi will reportedly return to Yankees
First baseman Jason Giambi will return to the Yankees for the 2005 season, and general manager Brian Cashman says the maligned slugger will be with the team for spring training, according to the New York Post.
It was widely thought the Yankees might attempt to trade Giambi or buy out the remainder of his $120 million contract after the San Francisco Chronicle reported Giambi testified to a California grand jury (in December 2003) that he used steroids.
Giambi was plagued by both injury and illness last season. However, Cashman told The Post, "He (Giambi) feels as good as he ever has. He's excited to put last year behind him. That's all I can really say."
What's more, Cashman gave the newspaper no hint of a contract buyout, and claimed Giambi will go to camp in Tampa, Fla. as the Bronx Bombers' DH or first baseman.
Last season, Giambi, whom the Yankees signed in December 2001, played in just 80 games and hit just .208 with 12 home runs.
The Yankees brought back first baseman Tino Martinez this off-season in a move many feel is an attempt to replace Giambi.
I think this is a good idea, you have to at least find out how good of a player this guy can be without the steroids. Who knows he might end up bein a really decent ballplayer.
Its just the rest of that 120 million contract that we have to pay him is killing me.
Oh and BTW.................
