    The 2005 US Open

Of course today's tennis is not what it used to be. I mean it's not as intense as it was during the "gilded age" (1974-84 IMO) for various reasons, the main one being linked to current players's duller attitudes (if not personalities)...

Yet I think there are a few players whose matches are worth being watched these days.

    Men's singles:

Russian MARAT SAFIN (US Open winner in 2000) plays an awesome game when he isn't overcome by his temper. But his moods precisely make him different. He kind of rocks in a way.

American ANDY RODDICK. I realized I'd misjudged him during his last Wimbledon final versus Federer. His cap "tic" and the way couldn't satnd still used to get on my nerves, and technically his serve took too much room in his game. But in Wimbledon I saw a fine guy who did everything he could against Federer. He showed nice aspects of what a sportsman is supposed to show, like fair play and the pleasure of playing. And he's still very young after all.

Australian LEYTON HEWITT deserves props for being amongst top players with his own weapons (regularity, perseverance, footwork, etc).

And congrats to "Dede", ANDRE AGASSI... He's still in the top 10, just like great "Jimbo" Connors was at the same age (35).

Women's singles (my fave part ):

Here, personalities aren't as important to me...

Russian MARIA SHARAPOVA (Wimbledon winner last year) just became WTA number one this week, but she hasn't one any Grand Slam Tournament since Wimbledon 2004. She's better win this year's US Open if she wants to be considered as a true nb 1...
As for physically, she sure is number 1 in the top 20 players (some who are ranked far behind are real bombs too).
MARIA SHARAPOVA's game is impressive, but a little stereotyped (a big serve, powerful baseline strokes, but rather few net points). But it's cool to have (once again) another very young (18) champion.

Belgian JUSTINE HENIN(-Hardenne) is my fave. She's nice, cute and French-speaking! A real fine young lady. And she plays a very complete game, has a beautiful technique and knows by heart the way to the net where her volleysare a real pleasure to see.

Belgian KIM CLIJSTERS is on her way back to the top (just as Justine Henin), I wouldn't be surprised if she won the Open. She's a very solid player, her game is a lot like Hewitt's game feminine version...

French AMELIE MAURESMO has often been disappointing in Grand Slams. It's all in her head, she could only make it if she stopped wondering about who knows what (who said her opponent's legs?:D)...

Australian ALICIA MOLIK is a splendid sportswoman IMO, at least as a competitor and as far as fair play. she quit the top ten a short time ago, but I really wish her to come back for I think she deserves to.

American JENNY CAPRIATI seems to be on her twilight. Too bad because when she came back in 2000-2001 and became world number one it was damn rejoicing to see.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT plays awesome tennis, she looks like a fine girl and it's too bad she's never really been recognized as she should have. She could well win this year.

THE WILLIAMS SISTERS have always got on my nerves, especially VENUS, because of their fucking attitude... But I respect them a lot, just as their "colleagues" for the amount of work and efforts that reaching such a level implies. Of course one of them could win this year too.

Are there any players you'd like to see holding the cup this year?

    1-Henin is not cute
2-Mauresmo has technical problems (too much faults with her forehand, the service could be better)

i would like to see andre agassi
holding the cup this year !!!

Agassi is 10-1 on hard courts this year...but is cortizoned up...

so, it's possible...5 setters can be killer...

if Agassi can make a run though...it would be bigger than the Connors 1991 run...

      but Connors was fucking 39...

Federa will win the US Open if he plays even close to his best.
I think he will play Lleyton in the final who has a great record in the US Open.
I would love to see Lleyton win but he is really struggling like everone else to find a chink in Federa's armour.
Would like to see Molik get that momentum back she had at the start of the year before she got stopped in her tracks by an ear infection.
        Love watching Sharapova,don't we all?

Yeah, Andre can still show them youngsters what he's made of in case they'd forgotten...
His game is still very impressive (Yannick Noah said Agassi was the most impressive player he'd ever seen on court when he retired).

Connors is one of my top 3 faves ever. There's a big difference between Agassi and Jimbo: Jimmy carried on doing a show until the end of his carrier, whereas Andre quit playing the gallery years ago.
Too bad, because being funny didn't prevent him from winning...

Yes, it'll be tough for other players to take Federer aback. He's even stronger than last year... He makes me think of great Pete Sampras as long as "fluency". VERY impressive.

It's funny how quickly people forget just how dominating that Sampras was...I'm not a big Sampras fan...but liked watching him play on the hard courts...and the grass...especially the grass...

but there's something to be said for winning on all 4 surfaces...

You mean Pete didn't, whereas Andre did (win the four Grand Slam Tournaments)...
Sure! Since Rod Laver's 1969 Grand Slam, Connors failed (he didn't play in Roland Garros from 74 to 78, and he won in Melbourne, Wimbledon and New York [Forrest Hills back then], so who knows? Maybe he could have done it in 1974), Borg failed (he lost 4 US Open finals, and as Melbourne took place in December, he used to say it was useless going there unless he'd won in New York after his "usual" Paris-London double, Mc Enroe could have done it if only he hadn't lost his mind and the bloody 1984 Roland Garros final he just couldn't lose... Lendl found awesome attackers who would never let him win on the English grass (McEnroe and Cash), Wilander never went further than 1/4 finals in Wimbledon (in 88 when he won the 3 other Tournaments), Edberg and Becker had trouble on "clay" and never could win in Paris, Sampras had big trouble on that surface due to footwork technique...
Agassi did win the four legs, though not in the same year, but he was able to "impose" his game on all courts, then he deserves to be part of the greatest legends of tennis.

                  I was talking about Agassi...

it's the only thing that he could do to match Sampras in status...being that Pete has what...12, 13, 14 grannies?

Agassi couldn't catch that...but has him winning on all 4 surfaces...

wasn't Mac up 2 sets to none on Lendl in 84?...or was it 2 to 1...

I think Sampras won 14... hard to beat!

McEnroe led 6/3, 6/2, 4/2, playing incredibly well considering it was on clay. What he did on the court was really huge... He was most inspired (which means a lot concerning McEnroe), Mac was just gonna do it in Roland Garros... Then he began to lose concentration, his shots got a little less precise, his volleys a bit less sharp, his serve slightly less efficient, and it was just enough for Lendl to cheer up, start to pass John and make him doubt.
Lendl won 3/6, 2/6, 6/4, 7/5, 7/5... What a waste! I remember he saved the first match point on his serve at the net. The second match point is still a big, big regret: 2 sets all, 5/6, 30/40. Mac serves on Lendl's backhand, the return is rather hard but it should have been easy to handle for the King of the Net... McEnroe had opened the court wide, he just had to put his forehand volley in a "boulevard", but he missed it, obviously aiming at the opposite corner, which was absolutely unnecessary.
Ah yeah, that's one of the biggest wastes ever...

BTW, Agassi won in Roland Garros in 99 after being led 1/6, 2/6... Medvedev's supporters must feel the same as Mac's fans do.

I remember those hard times of great Pete's. It was inhuman for him to play in such a sorrow...
His coach's name was Tim Gullikson. He (right-handed) and his twin brother Tom (left-handed) were a very successful doubles team (but they never won a big one, as there were always Lutz/Smith, Hewitt/McMillan, McNamara/McNamee or Fleming/McEnroe to stop them.

I'm no fan of Hewitt's attitude on court either, but as far as his game, and his game alone, no matter how arrogant he can be, he deserves consideration IMO.

Thanks for the pic. Jimbo reached the semi-finals again that year, just at the age of 39 as you said. Some of nowadays' players try to imitate his gestures, but somebody should tell them what was behind them... There will never be another one like him.

I remember staying awake due to time difference until 4am or so as soon as I was 9 years old to watch McEnroe's finals (vs Gerulaitis in 79, Borg in 80 and 81) and Jimbo's winning comeback in 82 and 83 (vs Lendl).
But the most awesome semis I can recall are those of 1984 (McEnroe vs Connors, Lendl vs Cash). All of them lasted 5 sets and were incredibly tensed.

You can still have tight scores today, of course, but matches in those days had something more ("soul")...
