Push to retire Clemente's #21 in all of MLB

I don't see this happening, as much as I would love to see it... It would be great to see while the Pirates host the '06 All-Star Game....

There is no doubt that Clemente's career meant as much to the Latino community, if not more, than Jackie Robinson's to the black community.

But I would predict that because the political correctness towards the Latino community is not as sensitive as it is towards blacks, this won't happen...

Clemente crusade: Group wants major-league teams to retire Pirates great's No. 21
    Wednesday, August 31, 2005

    By Shelly Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Fernando Mateo, president of Hispanics Across America, has a vision for July, when baseball's All-Star Game and its activities come to PNC Park.

He wants to see legendary Pirates right fielder and Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente's uniform No. 21 retired across the major leagues.

"One of the proudest days of my life will be to see Mrs. [Vera] Clemente with her three children watching that No. 21 being retired," Mateo said yesterday before he had a scheduled news conference in New York to promote his idea.

"Our goal is to get it retired by the All-Star Game," Mateo said. "We're starting a national campaign."

No. 42, worn by Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball's color barrier, is the only uniform retired across the major leagues.

Mateo believes Clemente is worthy of the same honor, and his organization is conducting a petition to gather support.

"The bottom line is that in this era of so many Latin ballplayers being caught up in scandals, and looking back at Roberto Clemente who was our true national hero in terms of baseball, the way he lived his life, the way he died to help save others -- that merits his number being retired by every ballclub," Mateo said.

Clemente spent his 18-year major-league career with the Pirates. He was a 12-time All-Star and a 12-time Gold Glove winner. He won four National League batting titles and had a career average of .317. In his last at-bat in 1972, Clemente got his 3,000th hit.

The following New Year's Eve, he died in a plane crash off the coast of his native Puerto Rico while on a relief mission to Nicaragua.

In 1973, the Pirates retired his No. 21, and he became the first Latin American to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame when the standard five-year waiting period was waived.

"We think we have a very strong argument," Mateo said.

Ray Schulte, agent for the Clemente family, said his clients support the campaign.

"The Clemente family would be honored," Schulte said. "We know there are people out there who admire him and feel the same way. There's so many people out there who loved him, so it doesn't surprise the family that somebody has undertaken this.

"Not only would it perpetuate his name, but it would help the Roberto Clemente Sports City."

Clemente's widow runs the sports complex in Puerto Rico.

Mateo said he wrote baseball commissioner Bud Selig about his idea.

"The response was fairly positive," he said. "They understand what our concerns are, they understand who Roberto Clemente was for our community, and they're going to very seriously consider it."

Richard Levin, spokesman for MLB, acknowledged correspondence with Mateo.

"We told him we would take it under advisement." Levin said, declining to speculate on any further action.

A Pirates spokeswoman said the team would defer comment to Major League Baseball.

"Right now we're at the beginning of a huge crusade and we're going need all the help we can get," Mateo said.

Yeah, and I don't necessarily disagree with it...

For starters, I think retiring Robinson's number in all of MLB was a purely politically correct statement... I'd have no problem with it if the just the Dodgers retired it, but for all of MLB to do it, that was simply appeasement, IMO....

Secondly, IF they were to retire Clemente's number, what would prevent the Japanese, Korean, Venezulean, and any other countries from clammoring for their 1st player to have his number retired... Now have they had the impact that the blacks or Latinos had in MLB ?? Absolutely not, but I'm just saying, eventually you'd start to hear the same thing from those communities....

As I said, as a lifelong Pirate fan, I would personally love it....

I don't actually remember watching Clemente play, although it's very possible that I did see him and just was too young to remember... He
          died when I was 8....

I actually liked to emulate Willie Stargell when I was young, with his windmill swing....

But the older I got, and the more I saw how great Clemente was, the more I wanted to pattern my own game after his....

Just listening to the hours of documentaries I've watched about him, and how the Latino community idolized him, I'm sure that they feel he should have his number retired...

          But it won't happen...

            LOL...

I got halfway through VA's post when I realized he wasn't talking about CLEMENS...

I'm thinking, yeah he sure doesn't mean alot to the Latino community... ROFL

That being said, it won't happen, but it fucking should.

No it should not happen. Jackie Robinson was a totally different case in the fact that he dealt with things no other player before him did and it was MLB's way of apologizing. If you start retiring numbers because of nationalities, then there will no be any numbers left to use.

Yes, I would agree with that, Robinson most definitely had to ensure terrible treatment....

However, as did numerous other blacks and Latinos during that timeperiod, including Clemente...

Let's not forget, the timespan between Robinson's and Clemente's entry into MLB was only 8 years, Robinson in '47 and Clemente in '55...

Like I said, I don't think they'll retire #21, but at the same time, Robinson's #42 should have been retired by the Dodgers only....

Major League Baseball retired the number 42 worn by Jackie Robinson in 1997 in remembrance of the 50th anniversary of his first MLB appearance, which broke the sport's 20th-century color line. Players who wore #42 at that time were allowed to continue wearing the number for the remainder of their careers; the most notable player affected by this clause is Mariano Rivera.

I agree with you Va that certainly Clemente has some of the remnant feelings from the fans...

but in 1947..I don't know if there were many PLAYERS who accepted black ballplayers taking away their jobs...

I'm not saying the feelings were any better in 1955...but I'm sure it was much more generally accepted. Not to mention the fact that by 1955, most teams had multi-african-american ballplayers...meaning RC didn't have to face it alone...

Not only did Jackie have to face it alone on the team...but in the whole damn league...
