ben mcdonald was decent. he just never got any run support from the o's. maybe he wasn't #1 pick-worthy, but he was an ok pitcher. definitely better than van poppel.

But Van Poppel ended up being a pitcher in this league for years...

        many years...

no...not a #1...but he was in the show...

Ankiel had a cup in the show...before losing the strike zone...now plugging along as an outfielder...

It has to be Brien Taylor...has to be...

        what a moron...

yeah, yeah, a guy who never played is clearly a huge bust.

but i just remember hearing a TON of hype about van poppel. more than pretty much every other pitcher. and then he did nothing with the A's and has been a mediocre middle reliever since then.

              Poppel was less than mediocre.

Didn't Brien get like a million dollar signing bonus... which was unheard of at the time.

                Taylor is certainly up there....

I specifically remembering that Ruben Rivera was being compared to Mickey Mantle, and getting synched when I got an autographed rookie card....

And of course, the Pirates' drafts for 15 years now have been one big collective bust.....

Nice call VA, with the Mantle comparison....I also remember that.

                  I voted Rivera.

I'm sorry...but any time you last as long as Van Poppel does in the league...and you have guys there that barely had a cup of coffee...

                    or not one at all...

                    there's no comparison...

All the hype for Van Poppel was because of one fucking Sports Illustrated cover article...

if SI chooses to not do that cover...none of us are even fucking discussing Van Poppel...

of course...he was compared to Ryan, Clemens and Koufax...

Of course...LOOOONNNNGGGGG BEFORE Van Poppel was David Clyde...

Clyde was a high school phenom in Texas in 1973...he had 5 high school no-hitters...

he went right to the majors...even though the scouts said he had kinks in his delivery...

20 days after he's drafted...He walks his first two, then strikes out the side in the first...ends up with 8 K's...AND 7 walks..but wins the game 4-3...

                      2 weeks later...he gets hammered in a 19-5 loss...

                      He goes 4-8 in 1973...

then 3-9 in 1974...not winning a game after May...

by early 1975...after he loses his first game...he's out of MLB...at the age of 20...sent to the minors...where he should have started.

in 1978, Cleveland trades for him, where he has his best year...at 8-11...his first win since may of 1974...

in 1979, he retires while at 3-4...

                      he's fucking 24 years old...

                      talk about crash and burn...

                        Of course...there are bigger ones...I think...that haven't been mentioned...

                        In 1966...

the first pick in the draft?

                        Steve Chilcott...

                        the 2nd?

                        Reggie Jackson...

Chilcott has to be up there...in the top 5...

Clyde becomes magnified when you consider that Robin Yount and Dave Winfield were both drafted in the top four...

both hall of famers...and Winfield went right to the Majors as well (and was also drafted in all other major drafts...football...basketball...

Then of course...there's Danny Goodwin...who was drafted first in the first round...

                            twice...

                            once in high school...

                            and four years later...

                            in college...

so he's a fucking double bust...
