FIVE members of an American university basketball team were injured in a hail of bullets, two of them critically, when a man opened fire on them following a school dance on a downtown Pittsburgh college campus.
One student was shot in the head and another was hit in the shoulder and forearm in the shooting at Duquesne University.
They were listed in critical condition at Mercy Hospital, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
One of those in critical condition was forward Sam Ashaolu, a cousin of former Houston Rockets star Hakeem Olajuwon.
The shootings took place at about 2.15am local time on the university campus after a party a few hours earlier.
The five had apparently had an argument with the suspect.
The Associated Press reported that the shootings occurred as several players were returning from the party at the student union and others were sitting on benches outside Vickroy Hall, the dormitory where the shootings took place.
According to police, two players were returning from the party when they encountered a man who apparently had been disruptive at the party. After the players tried to calm the man, the players began walking away before being shot.
Several other players who came to their aid were also shot.
Police were still searching for the man believed to have carrried out the shootings and were investigating whether anyone else was involved, AP said.
The shooter was not a Duquesne student.
The university said it was offering support and services to the victims and their families, as well as to other students who may have been affected by the shooting.
"First and foremost, we are concerned about our students and are praying that each of them has a full recovery," university spokeswoman Bridget Fare said.
