    Warner Gets Released

    Rams release two-time NFL MVP
    June 1, 2004
    SportsLine.com wire reports

ST. LOUIS -- Kurt Warner's storybook stay with the Rams ended Tuesday, but he's unlikely to be out of work for long.

The release of the two-time NFL MVP, who led the Rams to two Super Bowls, leaves Marc Bulger as the team's No. 1 quarterback. Bulger took over as the starter for good after Warner fumbled six times in last year's season opener.

Coincidentally, that game was against the New York Giants, the team likely to sign Warner to ease Eli Manning's transition to the NFL. Warner has not started and won a regular-season game since 2001, going 0-6 in 2002 and losing that one game last season.

Bulger, who is 18-4 as the Rams regular-season starter, signed a four-year, $19.1 million contract in April as the first major sign Warner would not be back. The team also signed backup Chris Chandler to a free-agent deal, and excused Warner from a three-day minicamp last month, all of which made Tuesday's news less than a blockbuster event.

Mark Bartelstein, Warner's agent, said Jay Zygmunt, the Rams' president of football operations, told him the team had filed the necessary papers with the NFL office.

"I think there's a lot of mixed emotions," Bartelstein said. "He's had so much success and such a great relationship with everyone in St. Louis.

"It's an unbelievable chapter in his life and an unbelievable chapter in the NFL. To leave that, I think, is hard, but he's in the prime of his career."

Bartelstein said four or five teams remained in the running for Warner's services, although most signs point to him signing with New York. He expected Warner, likely the biggest name to enter the second phase of free agency, would sign by the end of the week.

Kurt Warner's last start came at the Meadowlands. Might his career continue there with the Giants?(AP)
"Teams are calling all the time," Bartelstein said. "Kurt and I kind of have a preference, where we think is the best fit, and we're going to see if we can get that worked out.

"If we can, great, and if not, there's other choices."

By signing less than two months from the start of training camp, Warner is unlikely to get any guarantees of playing time. From that standpoint, the Giants might be the best fit right now.

"In June you're never going to find a place where someone says 'Our quarterback situation is wide open,"' Bartelstein said. "I also know if Kurt goes and plays the way he's capable of playing, and he helps the team win and win big it doesn't really matter who's waiting in the wings.

"Kurt is going to be the guy."

Warner, who turns 33 on June 22, led the Rams to Super Bowls in 1999 and 2001, but has been plagued by injuries since.

By waiting until now to cut Warner, the Rams will spread their salary cap hit over two years instead of one. He'll cost them $4.6 million this year and $6.7 million in 2005. His contract called for a $9.5 million salary this year.

Warner, undrafted out of Northern Iowa but an Arena League star, got the Rams' starting quarterback job in 1999 after Trent Green had a season-ending knee injury in the preseason. The Rams had endured a decade of losing seasons before Warner led the NFL with 41 touchdown passes, helping the team finish 13-3.

Warner also was the Super Bowl MVP after a 23-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

In 2001, Warner led the Rams to a 14-2 record, although St. Louis lost to the underdog New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Nothing much has gone right for Warner since then. He missed half of the 2002 season with hand injuries, throwing only three touchdown passes with 11 interceptions. That gave Bulger his first chance to shine with victories in his first six career starts.

Warner appeared to have regained his form last year with a strong preseason before his stumbling start in New York. Bulger never gave the Rams a reason to reconsider Warner the rest of the year.

Had to be a "double-bagged" situation.

He should ask her, "paper or plastic".

Be one way to get rid of her.

Look...Warner looks like Don Johnson circa 1983...

He probably had a freakin' white sport coat on...t-shirt...and some fag cabana pants on one night hangin' out at the Piggly Wiggly breakroom...

and Susan Powder was probably in the smoking section...hackin' out another kid...saying shit like, "I want to be your Tubbs..."

              the rest is history...

              Warner to the Giants...
"Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."

I think Martz released him because he was tired of listening to Warner's old lady on the radio every day bagging on the Rams.

                      He's not good anymore anyway.

                        Giants sign Kurt Warner

By TOM CANAVAN, AP Sports Writer

                        June 3, 2004

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner was signed by the New York Giants, giving the team a veteran quarterback in case top draft pick Eli Manning is not ready to start this season.

The contract is a two-year deal, voidable after the first year. Warner will make $3.5 million in salary and bonuses, and more than $8 million if he achieves all his incentives this season, a source close to the negotiations told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

``This is a great opportunity for me,'' Warner said. ``This team is built for success. There are a lot of pieces in place to make a run for the championship now. It was that combination that made me excited about this opportunity.''

The Giants started last season with Super Bowl expectations and finished with a 4-12 record that led to the firing of Jim Fassel and the hiring of Tom Coughlin.

Warner was to practice with the Giants on Thursday morning and then hold a press conference.

``This is a great fit,'' said Mark Bartelstein, Warner's agent. ``Obviously Manning is there, but this is New York and if Kurt wins they are not going to want him to leave.''

The contract, which was completed late Wednesday night, came a little more than 24 hours after Warner was released in a salary-cap move by St. Louis. The release ended an improbable run that saw the former Arena League quarterback twice take the Rams to the Super Bowl.

``When you have an opportunity to stockpile talent at the most important position in football, you do it,'' Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi said. ``I only have to look back on my own history with the quarterback position to see how important it is to have quality depth there. We have the best of both worlds right now, a blend of championship experience and youthful promise.''

Besides Warner and Manning, the Giants also have veteran Jesse Palmer and free agents Jared Lorenzen and Ryan Van Dyke on the roster.

The Giants waived veteran Kurt Kittner after signing Warner.

``The presence of Kurt's veteran leadership is going to be a great benefit to this team, especially our young quarterbacks,'' Coughlin said. ``As a young quarterback, you can learn an awful lot by watching how a guy like Kurt practices and prepares. It is a great learning tool.''

New York traded first-round draft picks this year and next and other choices to San Diego on draft day to acquire the rights to Manning, the Mississippi quarterback who was the top overall pick in the draft.

Warner comes to the Giants knowing Manning is the team's quarterback of the future.

The Giants had hoped that Kerry Collins would mentor Manning this season. But the veteran who led the Giants to a Super Bowl appearance in January 2001 refused to renegotiate a contract that would have paid him $7 million in the upcoming season.

Collins, who signed with Oakland last month, was cut days after the draft, forcing a search for a proven veteran.

Warner, who will turn 33 on June 22, is that. He led the Rams to Super Bowls in the 1999 and 2001 seasons, but has been plagued by injuries since.

His days in St. Louis were numbered once Marc Bulger was given a four-year, $19.1 million contract.

The Rams gave Warner permission to shop himself, knowing he would be released June 1. Warner met with the Giants last month.

Warner has battled injuries the last two years. He missed half of the 2002 season with hand injuries. He lost his starting job last season after sustaining a concussion in a season-opening loss to the Giants.

Warner hasn't won a game as a starter since the 2001 season, when he led the Rams to a 14-2 record. New England upset St. Louis in the Super Bowl, denying Warner a second title.

Warner led St. Louis to a title when the Rams beat Tennessee in Super Bowl XXXIV.
