Even then, they struggle to get out of the group stage

Are they the dark horse of the competition?
I wish they will get out of the woods. I was hooked during the 1995 Cup, especially the final against France, which was a great match and a model of fair play - not to mention the ambiance in the stadium, Mandela, De Clercq... What a memory.
Since they won the Tri Nations competition in 2004, the South Africans have done less and less well. This year they practically hit bottom, so it would be surprising if they did anything great in Frogland.
Originally posted by Grant I'm curious about the French side. Are they any good? Would think a home-crowd would work well in their favour.
They're pretty strong this year. Remember, they always did at least the semis, and often reached the final, even.
As for the crowds, there will be a "fair" proportion of dumbass chauvinists in them, even though the actual rugby fans aren't - but the World Cup effect will draw non rugby fans, which will get the support rowdier.
If the French team could reach those finals in the southern hemisphere, how wouldn't they eventually win the Cup when it takes place in their gardens?
