Earlier this month, columnist Tim Kawakami compiled a list of potential head coaching candidates for the San Francisco 49ers (as seen at right). This was based upon a hypothesis that current head coach Mike Singletary was not going to continue on after this season. That hypothesis has gotten more likely in the time since, especially after getting shut out at home on Sunday by a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that is one of the league's youngest, and certainly did not have preseason expectations on par with the 49ers'.
"We can sit back after losing today and talk about all this talent," linebacker Patrick Willis said following the 21-0 loss, per Kawakami. "But at the end of the day, it's what you do on Sunday. It's about who's ready to play on Sunday. And today, they were more ready to play than we were."
More ready to play? That seems like a direct reference to coaching, from this vantage point. As has been written before, a change appears to be coming in San Francisco, and it's more a matter of "when," not "if."
