I noticed several threads and posts bitching about RealPlayer format file (ra/ram) being used on the R.A. site. Maybe this will help.
A lot of great sites use RealPlayer because the file sizes are much smaller, than Windows Media Player file formats et. al., so this helps keep the monthly broadband bills from ripping the site owners a new ahole.
Smaller file sizes are also a lot easier for dialup users to download and enjoy. What I don’t like about RealPlayer is the company sucks, and the player can screw up the settings on your computer.
However, use an older version of RealPlayer, go into the Preference settings, and turn off all the crap RealPlayer has checked automatically, uncheck Windows Media Player and QuickTime file formats that RealPlayer has automatically checked, (if you are using either/both) and you will be fine for great sites like this one.
A good free version is RealPlayer Gold. Google for:
realoneplayerv2gold.exe
download, then virus/adware/malware check, before installing. File size is 8200 – 8400 KB, depending on exact version extension.
After you have installed it, and cleaned/tweaked it, also do the following.
To Stop Real Player Calling Home & Trying to Update:
Find file realsched.exe and change it to realsched.exe.xxx
On Windows OS systems, also go into your System Configuration>Start Menu, and uncheck any RealPlayer startup crap that resides there.
For advanced user, I have other tweaks to stop RealPlayer Network from serving up ads, utilizing a specific Firewall and TCP/IP HOSTS file IP block list, and also registry hacks to cleanup some of the crap RealPlayer installs on your OS, but this is enough info at this juncture.
Hope this was of benefit…Peace
