OK. I thought everybody would set a top 10, though I know it takes much time and some... sacrifices! :D

So I'll tell you about a riff of a band that were never considered as they should have: The Pretty Things.

The track is "£$D" which was released circa 1967. I won't explain who they are (they still tour today), the web will do that better than I.
But the riff on "£$D" is tremendous. It sounds of its time, a bit Indian (from India), hippy-like, but it's grand. A bit ethereal, but tough. It stretches pretty much, but it's masterful.

Another mere gem is the riff of "Old man going", in their masterpiece S.F. Sorrow (1968). The same kind, but harder. Purple, Zep' and Sabbath must have listened to Dick Taylor (the guitarist's name :D). A neglected wizard.
I saw them twice on stage. I went backstage the first time, had a fine chat with Phil May (the singer) whom I unintentionally shoved, Taylor whose coffee I spilled to start with, and finally the bassist, Wally Waller, who composed my favorite record of theirs, Parachute (1970).

If you dig guitars, go for S.F. SORROW.

I may be missing the subject a little in this post, but the riffs I mentioned make it in my opinion.

"Natural Thing" contains one helluva riff.
