Just what in the fuck is wrong with you? Why did you ever have to bring in that thieving limey cocksucker into this? Not only that, but how he talks of STEALING Brian's music and claiming it as his own? There is no "rivalry" just a limey with pirate blood ripping off American geniuses.

Brian probably wouldn't have been offended if Paul had borrowed from him though. Remember that "Surfing USA" was pretty much a chord for chord rewrite of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little 16" and "Don't Worry Baby" was by Brian's own admission, an "answer" to Phil Spector and the Ronettes "Be My Baby".

He dad did beat him - in a way. He sold all of Brian's song publishing rights without Brian's consent.

I recall reading various articles throughout the 1980's and 1990's and a few here and there over the last 25 years about the non-musical aspects of the group. I can't recall reading about Brian's dad selling Brian's song publishing rights without Brian's consent, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least had that happened. I mean, I don't disbelieve you for a moment when you say that. You get a little bit older and read about how the business side of the music business worked and works and you read countless stories about how these various pop icon musicians throughout the decades signed shitty deals to begin with and later on get bilked out of their publishing rights - or licensing rights or whatever - and it's no shock.

When you're younger and a music fan and you idolize these pop icon figures, you naively think simply because they're great musicians (or actors or athletes) and can create and perform music well that said ability extends to all other aspects of life. Usually, it doesn't, because what teenaged or early twentysomething knows anything about how business works?

I mean, for all the music magazine page space over the last 50 years that was given over to proclaiming Brian Wilson's musical genius, I didn't particularly agree. Then again, terms like 'genius' have been so overused as to be somewhat meaningless.

Love me some old timey Beach Boys, though. Surfs up, fuckers!

Yeah, that happened in the late 60s. I believe it was soon after the Smile album was effectively "cancelled" and Brian had pretty much withdrawn from the group for a while. Murry mistakenly thought that the Beach Boys commercial appeal was done for good, so he opted for the quick cash in. Even though he had no legal rights to do so, as he hadn't been their manager for years, by this time. I don't remember if Carl or Dennis signed off on their dad making this move or not.
