I picked up the new cd for my Dad who is 68 for Christmas. His favorite band has always been The Stones. He has done nothing but play the hell out of it and has lauded it with praise. I have heard 3 songs from it and will be grabbing the cd for myself. Great production, Mick absolutely wails on harmonica, and it just sounds like they had...fun...recording this. Truly The Stones playing songs they loved and man it shines through.Comment

The version you presented here definitely sounds much better and serves the song better than the album mix does.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Everybody blathers on about Get Yer Ya Ya's Out, but Love You Live has some fantastic stuff on it: the version of Sympathy For The Devil on it is awesome.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Love You Live was probably a better album than it should have been, given the condition the band - Keef especially - were in on that tour. Fortunately, the Paris concert that most of that album was recorded at went over a little better than the Knebworth festival, which had some cringeworthy moments....

I have the Paris and Knebworth footage in my collection, and scooped up the 75 Forum show when it came out. All of which is enjoyable to watch to a degree, although I'd be hard-pressed to say any of it reached the apex of what the Stones were doing live in 1969 or 1972. I mean, Billy Preston and Jagger grinding up against one another onstage after Preston sang a couple tunes was all a bit...a bit fey. The 1970s were definitely Jagger at his faggiest in terms of onstage mannerisms, and the 1975/1976 shows may well have been the height of the Dick Fagger persona.
However, at least Jagger was still actually singing on that tour. By the time the 1981 tour rolled around, Jagger was taking so many lazy vocal shortcuts with his live vocals and basically yelling the lyrics out, and the band itself was almost too rehearsed for their own good: I got some Seattle 1981 and Houston 1981 shows on a dvd trade maybe 6 years ago, along with the Hampton, VA show (which was in a very rough, obviously umpteenth generation from a vhs source), and the setlists and performances were so similar on each of the shows (and all of them basically the same as the LSTNG Phoenix/NJ shows) that I think I may have watched each of them once.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

It must also be said that Woody's best work with The Stones live was, indeed, the first tour he did with the band. He was throwing some good stuff out there during the shows.
He never really matured well with the group, despite having been with them for 40 years. Not as a songwriting force, nor as a live performer/ostensibly lead guitarist. A shame, really, considering Wood had a respectable pedigree prior to hooking up with them. Probably too much freebase in the early to mid 1980s. I mean, I can't even say Wood had many great moments on record with the band, considering how long he has been with them. Black And Blue only featured him on a couple of tracks. Some Girls was probably the one great Stones album Wood can lay claim to having an impact on. Emotional Rescue...meh. My favorite leads on Tattoo You were on tracks Wood didn't even play on. SOME of Undercover was...okay. Dirty Work up to the present = disposable.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Woody did a great job under tough conditions. With Keef usually so smacked up he could barely remain vertical, and Mick often off in the other direction on the Colombian marching powder, somebody had to take the middle lane and hold it together. Not a bad job at all for a rookie. Of course Bill, Charlie, and Billy Preston also did great on that tour, so by some miracle it all mostly held together (the Knebworth train wreck notwithstanding) despite the Glimmer Twins momentary "performance issues".Eat Us And Smile
