    Remembering Layne Staley

    RIP Layne

Remembering ALICE IN CHAINS' LAYNE STALEY - Apr. 5, 2006

Launch Radio Networks reports: ALICE IN CHAINS vocalist Layne Staley died four years ago today (April 5), at the end of a long and tragic descent into heroin addiction that ultimately sidelined his career and his band after three studio albums, an acoustic live disc and two EPs. The 34-year-old singer had all but disappeared from public view during the last few years of his life. His body was not found in his Seattle home until April 20, 2002, two weeks after the date on which it was ultimately determined that he died.

Staley was born in Kirkland, Washington on August 22, 1967 and began playing drums at the age of 12. He soon switched to singing and met guitarist Jerry Cantrell in 1987. The pair formed ALICE IN CHAINS, which started out as a glam band but eventually became one of Seattle's biggest "grunge" exports.

Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney recently reunited to appear at a taping of the VH1 Classic series "Decades Rock Live!" and plan to tour this summer with guest vocalists on the mic. Inez told Launch that the surviving members of the band still feel Staley's presence onstage with them. "He's in our hearts and we're carrying him with us every place we're gonna be playing this year," he said. "If anything we've got an angel looking out for us, you know, and of course, he's crazy."
"Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."

        Ain't that the truth.

It's a vicious cycle that usually ends with a situation like this one.

Other rock stars who have used for years and are still alive and well (I'm looking at you, Weiland) should count themselves as lucky.

Today's the 12th anniversary of Kurt's death as well. Both of them are still very much missed in their "home base"

Isn't it true that Staley only opened his door to his dealer and even ignored his bandmates for years, holed up in his home?

            Anyone know the details?

Some of them do, I think. Keith Richards has been known for saying in concert recently "it's good to be here.....it's good to be ANYWHERE".

I'd probably feel the same if I'd outlived so many people who did less drugs than me.

Yeah, that's pretty much the story. He had pretty much alienated everyone. Friends, family, bandmates, etc. Shit, the poor bastard had to disappear for over two weeks before anybody even bothered to check on him.

Dying a slow death from drugs is bad enough. Rotting on your couch for 15 days before anyone even realizes you're gone is fucking unthinkable.

                    Amen Matt.

Unique vocalist that put a haunting and powerful voice behind the band. Unlike anyone else, like Dave in that sense in my opinion. Another in that vein was Pearcy, who many don't like, but had that same sound all his own vocals wise.

The minute I heard "Man in the Box" the first time, I was fucking hooked.

Like Warham says, heroin sucks ... and like POJO said ... well, what he said.

                    Bad way to go ...

Sucked that Staley went out the way he did.

When Weiland goes, ain't gonna have an ounce of sympathy for him.

                          Isn't it a pity.

I don't see why people are cuntplaining about the new singer and performing under the name of AIC now, as there was not AIC anymore even with Layne alive, given his addiction and that they hadn't done anything for years.

I think we'll reach a AC/DC singer solution here as well. After all, Jerry always was the composing force of this band.

For some reason, I never cared 'bout AIC...
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?
