    Dimebag in the 80's

Dimebag doing the EVH thang. Starts off like Eruption and then there's also a Cathedral and a Spanish Fly moment.

If you asked me who this was, I'd have no idea it was Dime.

There was a time (Vulgar - Driven era) when these guys were indeed the 'Kings of Heavy Metal'.

          Another band ruined by egos...

Actually, he's doing Randy Rhoads with a bit of Van Halen mixed in towards the end...

                Nor would I.

I am a huge Pantera fan, and they made 4 classic records as far as I'm concerned: Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven and The Great Southern Trendkill (underrated, IMO).

Great, great Heavy Metal band that will go down in history for being innovative, writing smokin' riffs and killer lyrics and bringing a lot of things that were going on on the underground into a more mainstram type of metal. They also expanded what the Metallica and Megadeath had done in bringing a much heavier form of metal into a large number of households.

As to whether they were "The Kings of Metal" at any point in their career, I don't know. There were still a lot of bands around at that time who could justifiably claim the throne - Slayer immediately springs to mind.

Pantera was an awesome, awesome band though. Those records are killers.

Pretty much my basis of argument, as well. Pantera brought a lot of the extreme underground to the forefront, but they burned out awfully quickly. While they did have a very dedicated and pretty good sized fan base in a time when metal was not hip, I don't think you'll ever say the name Pantera and have it resonate in the same catagory as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne, etc.

A great band, no doubt - and had they stuck it out and kept writing quality material, anything might have been possible - but bright flames burn quickly, and honestly I don't think Pantera ever reached it's actual potential. Success and ego did a lot to derail them.

Absolutely: if they'd have kept going, and Dimebag hadn't passed, I have no doubt that they would have gotten into the REALLY big league with the bands you mentioned (Maiden etc...), but the egos caused the band to implode before that could ever happen.

They had to talent for a 25 year career, easily.

Doods, check it out, I used the phrase 'Kings of Heavy Metal' cuz that's a boast that Anselmo frequently used on stage during shows. Phil is prone to talking alot of shit. He said this during at least 2 shows I was at & it got me thinking, right now, this day & time, 'Who's better?'

One time it was on one of the first Ozzfests & he said something along the lines of 'If Ozzy & Sabbath are the Gods, then we are the Kings of Heavy Metal'. Not claiming to be the best of all time, which they clearly are not. Ego's & drugs destroyed the band before they made enough music to be considered in 'all-time' terms.

But!, from, let's say, 92 to 97, nobody could fuck with these guys.
I'll put these 10 songs up against any bands 10 during that 5 years.

                      1. Strength Beyond Strength
                      2. 5 Minutes Alone
                      3. A New Level
                      4. Mouth For War
                      5. Broken
                      6. The Underground In America / Shedding Skin
                      7. War Nerve
                      8. Rise
                      9. I Can't Hide
                      10. Becoming

Once they stopped ripping off Exhorder, they created their own 'Metal fried southern-boogie thrash sound' which was a perfect middle finger in the face of the pussified grunge scene. Even the slower shit like '10's' or 'Floods' was heavy as fuck. Musically, Vinnie & Dime were amazing. Phil & Dime grabbed most of the attention, but Vinnie put down some original fuckin beats on those albums. Terry Date's production was flawless as well.

If there was/is a more abrasive album than 'Far Beyond Driven' to be #1 on the pop charts (!), please fill me in! This album was so anticipated, I remember buying it at midnight, on the day it went on sale. One of the chains (Strawberries) around here had a big 'Midnight Pantera Sale!' thing going on. That kind of thing didn't exactly happen all the time for metal bands.

The only albums (for me) the were in the same league during this time were Fear Factory 'Demanufacture' & Machine Head's first two.

Slayer was in a serious funk during these years. No Lombardo , the seriously suspect 'Divine Intervention' (awful songwriting), the good-but-not-great 'Undisputed Attitude'. Slayer hasn't made a classic since 'Seasons' & I doubt they have another masterpiece in 'em.

Is Pantera in 'Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica' league? Hell naw.

                      But they could've been.

And it fuckin sucks that we'll never get to find out

To me, Pantera was the best replacement for Van Halen in the 90's.

Would've been awesome to see a reunited Pantera AND Van Halen double-bill...
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?
