God that motherfucker can play!
If you ever get the chance, go see him. Amazing guitarist.
Unlike Steve Vai or Whangbar Guitarstring, it never gets old.
He never plays songs...they are more like a collection of extended jams. Covering LARGE musical territory.
He has always had an inclination towards fusion, so he went out into jazz territory a few times....and the band was shit hot.
As I figured would be the case..."Mahogany Rush" are 3 guys who looked like they were shitting their own diapers when Frank was first famous back in the 70s.
But they were monster players. Bass player guy could play with ANY jazz god that has ever existed. One of those guys with unlimited abilities who can play impossible stuff.
The drummer held down the groove for the most part, but had fusion tendencies as well, and he and the bassist were locked in tighter than Michael Jackson's baby peepee in a 6-year-old's ass!
The fourth member of the band was a rhythm guitarist who also played electric violin and was fucking great at it. At times playing through a wah pedal, and sometimes with space echo on, he got some amazing stuff to come out of that instrument.
They started promptly at 9 with no opening act, and by 11 they showed no signs of letting up! They took no breaks, would finish one jam, Frank would make a comment or two, then they launched off into more extended ass kicking.
Frank played a 1960s Gibson SG with a narrow headstock, and 3 single-coil Fender-type pickups. It was packed in front of the stage, but I did glimpse what appeared to be a Plexi Marshall head. Dunno if it is an original or reissue.
His tone can easily be described: Listen to Frampton Comes Alive, and his guitar tone was almost identical. Sounded grate.
Here is a pic of that guitar, taken in Chicago in 2001:

So much as I hated to, I headed out. It is a school night ya know.
Heh....I just found this was the last night of the tour. No wonder.....
Got home, and one of a recently arrived flock of deer was lounging in my lower pasture:
