Generally that's the perfect match for me too!

There are excpetions to the "no scream" rule - some people can scream and put their personality across rather than just sounding generic.

But generally I hear really heavy bands that are so inventive musically and then there's just grunting over the top and I just think "what a wasted opportunity."

but Opeth's plan = Playing generic death metal, then coming out with a short acoustic piece. When people hear the acoustic piece, and have become so sick of the fucking screaming, they claim it as "genius".


Why can't they always make albums like Damnation? Brilliant lyrics and beautiful music...

I imagine you will, but if they're not for you then so be it....

I wouldn't say they are "genius" (there's a word that gets banded around way too much these days) but they are certainly very talented and have a unique sound/style.

I also agree with you that some of their output is hit-and-miss, but there again they are fairly prolific, so you've got to expect some mediocirty...

Michael Amott is a seriously awesome guitarist... wasted talent in a band like that.

I agree 100% - I can't listen to them for more than about five songs.

Amott was in a band called Carcass first. They also had a cookie monster vocalist, but at their best they were truly inventive in heavy music.

If you want to check them out (and I would seriously recommned it) avoid the earlier stuff which is dated death metal, and check out "Heartwork".
