    Johnny Depp as Freddie Mercury?

Louise Jury of the U.K.'s The Independent reports that "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp is being lined up to play a rock star for real in a biopic of the late QUEEN frontman Freddie Mercury.

Robert de Niro's company, Tribeca Productions, is said to be behind the project, which Brian May, the QUEEN guitarist, confirmed was in development. "Discussions are at an early stage," he said on his web site.

May described Depp as "fantastic." "He would be a worthy counterpart for Freddie on screen. I don't think I can say any more right now," he added.

De Niro has known Brian May and QUEEN's drummer, Roger Taylor, since they met at the Venice Film Festival in 1996 and ploughed his own money into their hit stage musical, "We Will Rock You". The musical was originally going to be about the band but the surviving members decided that would be too embarrassing for all involved.

The proposed biopic would tell the life story of Mercury, who was born in Zanzibar in 1946 and died from complications of AIDS in 1991, the day after confirming he had the disease.

His real name was Farrokh Bulsara but he adopted the name he was best known by at school in India, where he grew up. His family settled in England when he was in his teens. He performed with several bands before co-founding QUEEN in 1971.

It's hard saying, really; some Johnny Depp roles he seems born and bred to...others not so much...

            Could go either way, honestly...

I thought he did remarkably well in "Secret Window"...the "Pirates" franchise is ridiculously entertaining...I still to this day think that one of his best on screen performances was "The Ninth Gate" (which, by the way, is an EXCEPTIONALLY good movie and I HIGHLY suggest it, if you haven't already seen it)...

As Freddie Mercury...I'll say MAYBE...I am intrigued by the prospect, so that's a good sign to start...

Depp played a great Michael Jackson in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

He can handle the Mercury role

I'd say Depp's a great choice to play Mercury.

Though I can do without the 'personal' stuff Freddie started to dabble with in the 80s. :D

I guess that'll be part of it, oh well.

                  Freddie still rulz.

                      That's right!

Actually, I used to run around with a girl who had strikingly similar features...I never saw the Ninth Gate until long after we parted ways, but I sat bolt upright in bed as soon as she came on...

                      Actually...

I can give you an ENTIRE dissertation on The Ninth Gate...it'll break Sarge's Little Helper, trust me...

I have a HUGE theory in regards to that movie...

Funny, with the false teeth Depp wore in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" I thought he kind of looked a bit like Freddy Mercury as he then had that kind of overbite that Freddie had. Just my take.

I'm sure Depp can pull it off, its whether he'll want to play a gay/bisexual man (depending on who you listen to you).

The only other thing is that, although this sounds gay I'm gonna say it anyways, he's a bit too pretty to play Freddie.

Although, he didn't mind putting on women's clothing in "Ed Wood", which is without a doubt my favourite movie of his.
