True dat. UYI 1&2 had a lot of great stuff on them but unlike Appetite they also had fillers.

Unchainme, this is a fantastic thread dude!

I was never a huge Nirvana fan, I've got all the records and I listened to them loads, but I thought a lot of other "grunge" bands were far more inventive (just my opinion..)

Alice In Chains are possibly the most important heavy band of the past 15 years: whenever I hear a Nu Metal, EMO, Screamo etc band go into that "melodic" chorus (which ususally just means they stop screaming rather than writing a hook) I know who they're ripping off - AIC prooved that you could be ultra heavy and melodic, and that's fucking hard to do.

Soundgarden, sheer genius. From the skull crushing heaviness of Loud Love or Badmotorfinger, through the music eclectism of Superunkonown or Down on the Upside, you always had fantastic songs welded to great performances. No-one played like Kim, no one sang like Chirs Cornell. I just can't imagine how there records could be any better.

Janes Addiction, the 80's were getting boring until they came along. Trully unique, weird and wonderful. "Nothing Shocking" would be up there in my top ten favourite records...

Pearl Jam, the soul of "grunge". Neil Young wannbee's but heavier, gritty vocals and lyrics that hark back to the "stroyteller" days of the 60's - they always make you feel it, and their record this year was a return to form.

There were so many other bands I love too; Blind Melon, Mother Love Bone (wish those two had had longer, don't think we even scratched the surface of their potential), Temple of the Dog, Tad, all had fine moments.

If you want to check out a fantsitc grunge record, listen to Kerbdog "On the Turn", came out '96 I think. Quite simply, there's not a bad tune on it, great hooks, great lyircs and a guitar tone to die for....
