PAUL MCCARTNEY Wanted To Be In THEM CROOKED VULTURES

PAUL MCCARTNEY Wanted To Be In THEM CROOKED VULTURES - Jan. 18, 2010
According to NME.com, Paul McCartney wanted a place in Dave Grohl's supergroup THEM CROOKED VULTURES, but was turned down in favor of LED ZEPPELIN legend John Paul Jones.

THE BEATLES star said he was first told about THEM CROOKED VULTURES by Grohl when the two went out to dinner together after playing together at last February's Grammys ceremony.

"We went out for a bite to eat afterwards and Dave told me he was starting this band with Josh [Homme]," he told the Daily Mail. "I asked him who was playing bass and he rather sheepishly told me he'd approached John. So you read it here first; Paul McCartney was nearly the bass player in THEM CROOKED VULTURES."

Whew, I'm glad that didn't happen. Not that I have an active dislike for Sir Paul - far, far from it. It's just that Jones has consistently put out some fascinating work over the past 20 years, while McCartney...err, has not.

Here are some examples of Jones' work. The first is the title track from his 1999 album Zooma, while the second is the track "Shibuya Bop", from his 2001 album The Thunderchief. The third tune is called "Goose" and is yet another of the genuinely strange tracks from Zooma. It strongly indicates where much of Led Zeppelin's sound, if not ideas, really came from.

Sorry Paul rhyming 'June' with 'Moon' would never work with TC Vultures

Macca would be an interesting ingredient in T.C.V.
Not to dis. JPJ, but McCartney is a superior songwriter.
            I beg anyone to differ...

It would be interesting, but it wouldn't be TCV. The reason this album works is because of Jones' oddness meshing with (and in places expanding upon) Josh Homme's riffs. Look, I'm a hardcore McCartney fan. But even I'm willing to admit that he hasn't come up with a listenable album since 1999's Run, Devil Run, and that was a bunch of 50's covers. Before that, you'd have to go back to Flowers In The Dirt, which came out 10 years earlier.

Yeah, I agree with Craig. I'd love to see Sir Paul get into another band setting but T.C.V. would not be the guys I'd like to see him hook up with. JPJ works in that band really well.....Paul...couldn't see it. IMHO.

                  Not dissing Macca but,

Going from JPJ to McCartney is like going from 'Speedballs to Milshakes' (copyright DLR 2002)

I guess JPJ was lying when he told Eddie he didn't play bass anymore. :tongue0011:

Wouldn't it be a little too heavy for Macca?
