Farewell, Dio: You Got to Bleed for the Dancer
It wasn't just his mighty pipes that made him Ronnie James Dio — it was his moral fervor. With Black Sabbath classics like "Heaven and Hell," or Eighties solo classics like "Holy Diver" and "The Last in Line," what always stood out was Dio's raging compassion for the lost rock & roll children in his audience, his fiercely anti-clerical religiosity, his hatred for the kings and queens who blind our eyes and steal our dreams. Dio barely ever sang about women unless he was empathizing with them, as in "Invisible," where he also empathized with gay teenagers, which was (to say the least) a bold move from a straight rock star in 1983
Dio was already a metal legend when he replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath in 1980, but it was his own Eighties albums that meant the most to me. Like Morrissey, who entered my world around the same time Dio invaded MTV with "Rainbow in the Dark," he trafficked in over-the-top romantic imagery that made him incomprehensible to outsiders (i.e. adults), but he used all his swords-and-demons imagery as a metaphor for teen angst. So he made us feel like we were holy divers who'd been holding our breath too long, but someday we'd come up for air; we were Israelites who would one day shake off the Pharaoh's chains; we were rainbows in the dark, waiting for some sign of the morning; we were the last in line, not knowing if we were evil or divine. Dio never pretended to be one of the kids — he sang as an adult assuring us that we weren't alone in our suffering, and some day we might even be proud of conquering it. Morrissey sang, "There is a light that never goes out"; Dio sang, "Some light can never be seen." But they were coming from the same dark place, really.
Unlike Morrissey, Dio was famous for not being a dick. His gracious, gentlemanly manner was part of the mystique. My favorite Dio story, told to me by a not-so-famous metal singer who shall remain nameless: it's backstage at a European rock festival where Dio is headlining.
Not-so-famous guy, who's on the bottom of the bill, says, "Mr. Dio, I'm a big fan of yours." Dio solemnly replies, "And I yours." The guy was blown away Dio knew his name — but what I love is that mega-formal locution "And I yours," which made it a very Dio thing to say. Sail on, RJD.Comment

LOL. How fucking awesome is that? Dio was so dang cool it's unreal. Hopefully in his death, some of the new rockers will take some of these tales and apply them to how they approach other people & fans. A touch of humility goes a long way. Ronnie had a lot of class, that's for sure. You compare him to someone of Axl Roses ilk and it's just night & day.“Great losses often bring only a numb shock. That sounds a lot like a story the singer of Virgin Steele shared...
"I was introduced to him by my good friend and longtime VIRGIN STEELE photographer Gail Flug. Gail had known Ronnie for many years, and one evening when we were at a DIO gig, she said, 'Hey, Ronnie, I want you to meet my friend David,' and I began to say, 'Hi, Ronnie, it's so very nice to meet you, I am a huge fan of your work, my name is David, etc. etc.,' and he looked me straight in the eye and said, 'I know who you are, my son.' That totally floored me.
I can't think of anyone else in the rock/metal/music universe who will receive so many heart felt condolences that focus on his kind nature as much as they do his great musical contributions.
That being said... I think that Bill Ward's words were kinda shitty... maybe I'm just reading them the wrong way...
"We wish to extend our positive thoughts and love to all those who loved Ronnie, and we salute him as a singer, performer, songwriter and arranger."
That's all he has? That reads to me like personally Bill Ward has nothing nice to say about Dio... I guess he's still pretty far up Sharon and Ozzy's asses or he still has hurt feelings on not having the chops to sit behind the kit for the Heaven & Hell project... douchebag.Comment

When I meet RJD back in 1988 during a fan meet & greet backstage I was reallly nervous because it was my very first "rock star " encounter.Not-so-famous guy, who's on the bottom of the bill, says, "Mr. Dio, I'm a big fan of yours." RJD & Wendy were sitting on a couch in a backstage dressing room area and I went up to him and shook his hand and said,"Nice To Meet You."
RJD then smiled and he replied "Nice to meet YOU",which felt really sincere and not a hint of bullshit.
We chatted for not even a minute about his songs and I moved on because I didn't want to take up to much of his time and there was other fans he needed to greet.
and I noticed that he was nice to everyone that spoke to him,thanked everyone for being a fan and coming to the show and didn't have a "bow before me " attitude.
(Drummer Vinnie Appice on the other hand was flirting with my girlfriend while I was talking with Dio and the other band members.)Comment

Also I saw in Lisbon, Portugal the other night Metallica did a small tribute to RJD. Kirk played "Children of the Sea" during one of his solos. James also dedicated "Fade to Black" to their friend Ronnie. the video is on thier tour site. www.metontour.comComment

Actor Jack Black of TENACIOUS D — the metal-inspired comic rock collaboration also featuring Kyle Gass — has released the following statement regarding the passing of legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW) (via Time magazine):
"Dio has always been my favorite heavy-metal vocalist. Not just for his musical chops but also for the passion he poured into every performance. His use of beautifully haunting melodies leading to volcanic eruptions of raw rock power led to some of the great anthems of the genre.
"When Dio, who died May 16 at 67, performed live, he would stalk the stage like a dragon slayer. His commitment and theatricality were spellbinding. As a teenager I was profoundly moved by the life-affirming fire of his songs. They were filled with glory. They made me want to climb mountains and battle demons.
"To listen to Dio is to be transported to an ancient time of mystery and joy. His songs were an escape for millions of kids looking for release from the usual bull found on the FM dial.
"I had a chance to work with him, and he was about as cool a person as you could hope to meet. He was generous and soft-spoken, humble and serene, and had a tremendous sense of humor.
"Thank you, Dio.
TENACIOUS D was featured in DIO's video for the song "Push" (see below). In addition, Ronnie appeared in Black and Gass' rock comedy "Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny".
In the film, Dio plays an apparition of himself — a kind of heavy metal Yoda — who counsels the 10-year-old Black on how to make good his dreams of rock grandeur. "The kid's sitting on the bed and he starts to sing to a huge poster of me — he's asking me what to do, saying all he really wants to do is rock 'n' roll," Dio said in a 2006 interview. "Then I come alive from the poster and tell him: Go to Hollywood where you'll meet your partner and rock 'n' roll forever."Comment

In what appears to be RONNIE JAMES DIO's (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL, RAINBOW, ELF) final interview, Steve Simon from Texas' 39 News spoke with the legendary singer at The University Of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center while he was in chemo treatment just prior to his death on on Sunday, May 16th at 7:45 AM PST at the age of 67. Ronnie chose to personally sign each Box Set in small amounts as orders were placed. Due to Ronnie’s untimely passing, he was unable to sign the rest of the sets. We only made 1,500 of the “Tournado” Box Sets and we know that every Dio fan will cherish it forever.
