Ronnie James Dio's widow asks for tolerance over planned memorial protest
Wendy Dio, the widow of heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio, is asking her husband’s family members, friends and fans to “turn the other cheek” to members of the fringe Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas who have called for a protest at Sunday’s public memorial service for Dio at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Dio died May 16 in Los Angeles at age 67 after a battle with stomach cancer.

“Ronnie hates prejudice and violence,” Wendy Dio has written in a response posted on her husband’s website. “We need to turn the other cheek on these people that only know how to hate someone they didn’t know.”

The Topeka, Kan.-based church called for the protest at the service for Dio, the singer who took over as frontman for Black Sabbath when Ozzy Osbourne left the group, because, it says, “He had a platform from which to tell the masses the truth of God and instead he started the devil horn hand sign and glorified atheism.” The group has often picketed funeral services for U.S. military personnel killed in combat because the church believes it is God’s retribution for U.S. tolerance of gays and lesbians.

The Westboro's call to action at Dio’s memorial is one of nine protests scheduled by the church at different events over the Memorial Day weekend in California, Oregon, Virginia and Washington, D.C. The group also protested a staging of the musical "Rent" last year at Corona del Mar High School because of its sympathetic portrayals of gay characters.

California rock veterans Y&T performed a cover version of the DIO classic "Rainbow In The Dark" on May 22, 2010 at the Fillmore in San Francisco, California in honor of legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW) who passed away on May 16 after a six-month battle with stomach cancer.

Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be viewed below.

Y&T guitarist/vocalist Dave Meniketti recently released the following statement regarding the passing of Ronnie James Dio:

"At this current moment in time this is very difficult for me as I'm extremely saddened by the news of his passing so I may not so eloquently say exactly what I feel, but here it is, just the same.

"Though I can only speak of Ronnie as an acquaintance, his impact on me has been one of positivity and I will forever remember his spirit. This is not simply because he has been so kind to me over his career, but because he has reinforced the feelings I have for the way one should lead their lives as an entertainer and as a man.

"His talent speaks for itself, but his kindness to his fans and commitment to his art was exceptional. This man, with such an amazing and uncanny voice that had lasted for his entirety, has taught me a few things about how to be selfless, yet frank and unapologetic about life as a public figure and artist. As I have witnessed, Ronnie, no matter how tired, would greet every fan with true sincerity and complete attention, never belittling them, nor seeming to show any trace of being impatient with the commitment that comes with being a star.

"When I think back as Y&T started our first of many shows on tour together for the 'Meanstreak' record in 1983, I remember my feelings about hearing his voice for the first time. We had just walked into the hall as Dio was sound-checking. I had made it half way across the concert hall, looking for our backstage room as he started to sing. I stopped in my tracks and looked back in amazement as this incredibly huge voice bellowed out from the PA speakers. I was both taken aback and incredibly intimidated by his ability. Absolutely astonished, is all I could feel.

"Since that time, the band had become friends with the Dio bunch and have had many interactions throughout the years after.

"I remember when we were recording our 'Contagious' CD how the guys were across the parking lot rehearsing and we would each hang out at each others places. I remember the full bar, in a road case, that Ronnie had for their rehearsals and thought 'how cool is that.' I remember Vinny selflessly coming in the studio to help Jimmy work out how to play the beat to 'L.A. Rocks' when he was having trouble with the groove. And I mostly remember how Ronnie had entrusted me to be the first singer on the 'Stars' single for the HEAR N' AID project. His guidance as I sang the track was both knowledgeable and respectful, always in control and always a gentleman. I have many more personal memories that I will keep to myself, but suffice it to say that this man was a true star.

"I terribly mourn the loss of him and celebrate him to the highest. We have all lost a legendary vocalist and, as far as I'm concerned, a fine man beyond reproach. For myself, I have lost what I considered a true friend in what can often be a cut-throat and unfriendly business.

          "Long live Ronnie James Dio."

I wish one of those Westboro fucks would bump into me, even by accident. Whatever I'd do would be justifiable. "Self-defense, your honor"

I still don't fully understand why they're protesting Ronnies memorial. WTF!

There was something in their statement about if he "wasn't a Satan-worshiper, he was at least an enabler". Plus it's a slow news cycle, they've been out of the public eye for a bit, what better way to get their sorry asses back in the news?

                        It's all about publicity.

Without it they are just a tiny handful of mentally disturbed inbred child abusers.

It's desperate, but that doesn't surprise me...nothing those deranged lowlifes do surprises me anymore.

Have you seen their protest calendar and the places they choose to protest? Youth centers, womens groups, and Bon Jovi concerts. Their primary focus is tormenting women and children.
The reason for that is because they're cowards.

I'll bet it's never occured to this group of skells that maybe what GOD actually "HATES" is a group of spineless cowards trying to speak for him.

I just hope the riders are there to build a human shield against this bullshit, because Ronnie doesn't deserve that at all!

                                This is a good one...

MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE Remembers RONNIE JAMES DIO - May 26, 2010
During an appearance on this past Monday's (May 24) edition of the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline" with host Bob Coburn, MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine spoke about the legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW), who passed away on May 16 after a six-month battle with cancer.

"Everybody that's ever met Ronnie, they've got different types of stories," Mustaine said. "We've heard types of stories about his voice and how great he was as a man. And we've heard stories about his different lineups that he's been with.

"One of the things that I remember him most for was 'Sixteenth Century Greensleeves' and 'Man On The Silver Mountain', which was the first record that I'd ever gotten from him with [RAINBOW guitarist Ritchie] Blackmore.

"We had gone out on tour with him when [MEGADETH's] 'So Far, So Good, So What' came out and it was really, really making a statement, because we had broken the Top 200 with thrash metal, and nobody really knew what thrash metal was at the time.

"I remember talking to Ronnie — we were in catering — and I go, 'Hey, Ronnie, I just wanna thank you for taking us out on tour.' He goes, 'Yeah, man. Thanks to you for coming, too.' And I said, 'No. I mean, really. Thanks. It's really cool.' And he goes, 'Look, we could both sit here and give each other handjobs or we could smoke this joint. What do you think?' And I was like, 'Well...' So, needless to say, we smoked a joint and I passed on the handjob."
