I agree Little T, Metallica is past their expiration date but they're not the only ones (Stones, Kiss, Aerosmith etc). The next Metallica album 'proper' will be in the vein of Death Magnetic. No question.
The record with Lou Reed is essentially them backing him, much in the same way that Pearl Jam backed Neil Young. Reed wrote all the tunes, and they recorded it in 1 month. As such, it is a fun thing for them to do, not a new Metallica record in that sense of the term.
