I'm thinking he either lasso-ed the rope to the rafter or since it's in a barn, he had a thing of hay to stand on, but random animals ate it over time

well, the only other thing i can think of that would disappear is ice (melting and all that) but where the hell is he going to find a block of ice that big in a barn?
