Field goal seals win for Souths
August 20, 2005
A BEN Walker field goal sealed a thrilling 17-16 victory for South Sydney over the Sydney Roosters in a a spiteful NRL clash at Aussie Stadium.
The Roosters' season is all but over while Souths have defeated their fierce rivals for the first time since 1994 in a riveting contest.
Walker's 76th-minute field goal ensured the Rabbitohs have won five out of their past six games in a stunning late-season revival.
The victory gives them some breathing space in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon after Newcastle defeated the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland tonight.
The only downside for the Rabbitohs is that centre Luke MacDougall is staring down the barrel of a lengthy suspension.
He was reported for a dangerous throw on Anthony Minichiello in the 64th minute, with the fullback landing awkwardly on his head.
In a weekend celebrating the 1970s when foul play was not so rigorously policed, tonight's local derby had plenty of spite as three players were sin-binned for fighting.
The Roosters raced to a 12-0 lead with tries to backs Amos Roberts and Minichiello after 15 minutes.
Souths skipper Ashley Harrison crashed over from close range in the 28th minute and Walker converted to reduce the home side's deficit to 12-6.
Referee Russell Smith angered the Rabbitohs faithful for awarding the Roosters six penalties before giving one to Souths in the 27th minute.
Smith stamped his authority on the game early in the second half, sending Souths centre Shannon Hegarty and Sydney prop David Shillington to the sin-bin after the pair became involved in a scuffle which sparked an all-in brawl.
The Roosters got the penalty and Craig Fitzgibbon added two points to give the Roosters a 14-6 lead.
A Walker penalty goal in the 57th minute put Souths within striking distance at 14-8 behind.
They struck in the 59th minute when Yileen Gordon caught a Walker bomb and passed to John Sutton, who set up prop Scott Geddes for a try under the posts.
Walker added the extras to drew level at 14-all.
His 69th-minute penalty goal – which hit the posts and ricocheted in – put the home side 16-14 after Roosters enforcer Michael Crocker had been sin-binned for continual niggle.
But the 2002 premiers drew level again through a Fitzgibbon penalty goal with just nine minutes remaining after Souths were caught off-side.Comment
