Here we are, roughly three weeks after the fact, yet the way I see it, outside of some finely inspired artwork being created and some wounded feelings being generated, not much has been accomplished. In other words, more heat than light. The truth is, the folks involved on both sides of this issue (along with the handlful that were not directly involved) need to look at this for what it is: A simple cyberspace blunder.
The act of bannishing someone from a site should be the last step in a well thought out and pragmatic process a website should already have in place to deal with a disruptive poster. For instance, a public warning in a thread would be the start, followed by a private statement if the behavior continues. Failing that, the offender should have their posting privaleges removed, for a period of 24-72 hours, depending upon the offense. This allows not only the poster, yet the moderator handling the issue time to cool off.
When the person returns, if the behavior starts up, repeat the above steps. If upon the third time this seems it isn't going to work, then boot the character.
Ultimately, the person will either do one of two things:
Join another site and ala Eddie Van Halen make wounded noises about who does and doesn't "get it", or borrow a friend or co-worker's PC (or stop by a library on the way home) and simply create a new ID and rejoin.
Look, the majority of folks out there are bound by reason, and usually will wake up and smell the coffee if given a chance. And if you really look at it, some of the seemingly disturbed posters remaining are in fact the very ones that give a site it's character through the entertainment offered. The fact is, some of these wingnuts can be downright insightful at times, given the proper subject.
I believe both sides in this mess should admit mistakes were made, and that DC should be reinstated at Rothfans. Quite frankly, I miss the guy's take on things. And for that matter, I believe Blackflag should be allowed to return to the Army and given a second shot at things.
