Agree with Marky, 'tis a dayummm shame that it was caught cos one that size has to be pretty old.

I was fortunate enough to dive with two hammerheads (only about twelve footers) a dozen or so miles back in The Sea of Cortez. Fucking amazing and beautiful fish!!!

I remember them catching a mega mouth shark off the coast of San Francisco a few years back. Fortunately, they just got it's stats and let it disappear back into the abyss.

There's another "new" shark that's only been discovered recently. Saw it on last year's "Shark Week" on Discovery Channel. It's some arctic shark that feeds on whales and polar bears. They have a hard time documenting it cos of the frigid waters and it's apparently nocturnal.

They're guessing around forty years old. Bummer huh? Makes one wonder how old they can live?

Another cool fact about sharks is that they're immune to cancer. Due to that fact alone and not withstanding how vital they are to the food chain, they should quit being over-fucking-fished. Better yet, the Japanese (Sorry Cato. ) need to quit pulling them onto boats, chopping off their fins just to toss their now useless bodies back into the ocean to sink for that $500 a bowl shark fin soup!!! Fuckers!!!

I have heard about the immunity to cancer as well. They are considered a perfect organism, as they haven't evolved in over a million years, because there was no need to.
It is truly harsh how fisherman harvest shark fins.
As great as the movie Jaws was/is, it didn't do the shark's rep any favors. They just happen to rule the sea, much like the big cats on land, or birds of prey in the sky.

Some think it may have survived up until the era of modern man about 10,000 years ago. But most say it died off millions of years ago because of the massive requirement to feed...

I once saw an interview with Peter Benchley where he stated that his original inspiration for "JAWS" was "what if a megaladon still existed, came back and reeked havoc?" He combined that with what actually transpired in 1916 all up the eastern coast and voila!!! JAWS :D
