My dad had a huge ham radio antenna on a big tower that was 200 feet tall if I remember right. There was a guy he would hire to go up and do repairs and he would only climb the antenna at night because he couldn't see how high he was and the tower would sway and at night there was less of a sensation of that.
We don't have those big towers around here because we have mountains but I remember flying a plane around Kansas City and seeing those tall towers and going holy shit! Around here, you are concerned about flying into mountains, in the midwest you are concerned about flying into radio towers. No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

But these guys are in a whole league of their own. One of my tree monkey friends had done a few bulb replacements on towers in the 500 foot range......

I had a friend who was a guitarist. Played in a thrash band called Dead Orchestra.
Really nice guy, great guitarist.
He would earn extra cash by climbing these fucking radio tours 5-700 feet tall to replace the light bulbs.
No fucking way would I even consider thinking about doing anything like that.
I find that if I play PC games (like Grand Theft Auto) and am up on top of skyscrapers, when I walk to the edge and look down my palms get all sweaty and I get butterflies in my stomach.
I have no problem flying in planes. But I do NOT like to go up in buildings over 3-4 stories tall, or go anyplace where I have to look down and see a drop of 100 feet or more. It is my only phobia of any kind.Comment

Wouldn't it be awesome if when done with work, instead of a 30 minute-1 hour climb back down, they just parachuted down? WEEEEEEEEEEE!
Fuck that job though. Made me sick watching it. Got 3 minutes in or so & had to stop. Oddly enough, when I climb ladders, or on the roof, or any type of heights, I get worse when I look up. They always say don't look down, but I actually feel worse looking up.
I have a smoke detector that I haven't put a new battery in ever. Fuck that. Thing is like 18 feet up.“Great losses often bring only a numb shock. To truly plunge a victim into misery, you must overwhelm him with many small sufferings.”Comment

I climbed the Owen Spalding route on the Grand Teton two years ago. Still better than hanging on those bolts on that tower. No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment
