Superman Turns Socialist Renounces US Citizenship

In Action Comics’ new record-breaking 900th issue, the iconic super hero renounces his U.S citizenship following a clash with the federal government. The Man of Steel, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938, has always been recognized as a devoted American warrior who constantly fought evil, but as of Thursday, he is no longer the country's own to claim.

"Truth, justice, and the American way -- it's not enough anymore," he states.

I'll suspect he'll set up shop somewhere in France.

I saw a blurb on this yesterday, and while I was more of a Marvel fan as a kid, this seems like a really interesting storyline. I saw a couple of sample panels from the upcoming comic, and Supes states "I'm tired of having my actions misconstrued as US Policy." I guess the premise is he showed up in Iran to support the peaceful protests (comics tend to mirror real-world events way more closely than when WE were kids, it seems) and it was declared an "Act of War" by the Iranian gov't.

And as a TRUE "alien" immigrant, shouldn't he be more of a protector of his adopted PLANET, not just the country he happened to land in?

Bush did a huge amount of damage to the US reputation. I remember when 911 happened the nation pulled together for a mere second. Foreign countries didn't hate us like they hate us now. One of our neighbors when I was growing up would tell us about the Berlin air lift and seeing the candy bars floating down on the little parachutes. I remember one German lady saying the US troops were so nice to the German kids when they came into Germany and were not the monsters the government made them to be. All that stuff. Now what you hear is how stupid our leaders are and how they burn through money and how we deserve our fate and all that. It's very negative right now. You know it's gone to real shit when Captain America renounces his citizenship.

Two of the most intriguing "alternate Superman" stories I'd ever read were one that appeared in an obscure science fiction anthology (the name escapes me) from the 1970s, and Frank Miller's startling reinterpretation in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. In the former, Superman comes to Earth, landing not in Smallville, but in the heart of the Wiemar Republic. As a result, he grows to be a defender of Nazi Germany, completely changing the outcome of WWII. This same story was used in a SNL skit entitled What If: Uberman as well as the graphic comic Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar.

The Dark Knight take on Superman was equally subversive, as it revealed him to be a pawn of the then-Reagan government, and ultimately ended with a battle to the death between Superman and Batman, as the latter of the two had grown disgusted and disillusioned by government policies and insouciance that had lead to the corruption of an America he could no longer recognize.

In a way, every generation gets the entertainment it deserves. Hell, DC went as far as to kill the guy a few years ago to spurn interest in declining sales. This "current" Superman is no different.

Here's my view on it..

I don't believe Comics should be overtly political. Now, subtly is nice and quite an underrated concept. I believe that the Dark Knight for example was able to somewhat get off a decent underlying message in one of the plot points, but didn't do it as "YEAH! FUCK YOU REPUBLICANS AND/OR DEMOCRATS!".

And "Red Son" was pretty cool, and interesting take on things.

But I think this and what had happened with Captain America in relation to the Tea Partiers and going 9/11 truther in one of the issues is bullshit.

Just go subtle with it, it reads a lot better.

He is supposed to be out flying around beating up bad guys, catching falling helicopters, catching up to & re-directing rogue missiles. Not singing Kumbaya while chained to a fucking tree!

Everything is too damn political now. It got that way when a few people started buying up the media. Most of the media and entertainment is owned by fewer people now. It was better when all of that ownership was more diversified and local. Once a few people own the media they start pushing an agenda that bennefits them. Look at the news. We don't have real news anymore. We have talk shows and instead of it being neutral which news is suppossed to be, the host is taking a side. I hate that shit. It's also happening in the educational system. They don't want critical thinkers anymore. They want conformists. They want people just barely smart enough to provide what they want and dumb enough to not figure out they are being royally screwed. Then they put it into a social matrix that anyone that rebells is fingered as a nutcase. We are losing our individualism and a system of government that protected that right.
