This is a major blow to any argument the DEA or conservative lawmakers could ever come up with to explain why pot is against the law:

National Cancer Institute: Cannabis Has Antitumor Capabilities, Is An Appetite Stimulant And Painkiller

In claims that are in vast contrast to those of the Drug Enforcement Administrationand other government entities, the government-funded National Cancer Institute has a report published on its website which proclaims several benefits of cannabis and cannabinoids, citing numerous scientific studies to back their claims. The page was updated last month.

The report starts by explaining what cannabinoids are;”Cannabinoids are a group of 21-carbon-containing terpenophenolic compounds produced uniquely by Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica species”, the report continues, “These plant-derived compounds may be referred to as phytocannabinoids. Although delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the primary psychoactive ingredient, other known compounds with biologic activity are cannabinol, cannabidiol (CBD), cannabichromene, cannabigerol, tetrahydrocannabivarin, and delta-8-THC. CBD, in particular, is thought to have significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity without the psychoactive effect (high) of delta-9-THC.”

The report then goes on to talk about the potential antitumor capabilities of cannabis and cannabinoids.

“One study in mice and rats suggested that cannabinoids may have a protective effect against the development of certain types of tumors.” They continue; “Cannabinoids may cause antitumor effects by various mechanisms, including induction of cell death, inhibition of cell growth, and inhibition of tumor angiogenesis invasion and metastasis. One review summarizes the molecular mechanisms of action of cannabinoids as antitumor agents. Cannabinoids appear to kill tumor cells but do not affect their nontransformed counterparts and may even protect them from cell death.”

The NCI clearly doesn’t agree with the government’s stance that cannabis has “no accepted medical value”.

According to the report; “An in vitro study of the effect of CBD on programmed cell death in breast cancer cell lines found that CBD induced programmed cell death, independent of the CB1, CB2, or vanilloid receptors. CBD inhibited the survival of both estrogen receptor-positive and estrogen receptor-negative breast cancercell lines, inducing apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner while having little effect on nontumorigenic, mammary cells.”

In addition, the report states, “both plant-derived and endogenous cannabinoids have been studied for anti-inflammatory effects.”

After giving a comprehensive report on the potential anti-tumor capabilities of cannabis, theNational Cancer Institute then goes on to speak about cannabis as an effective painkiller, and as an appetite stimulant.

This report, which cites dozens of scientific references, should be something that cannabis advocates share far and wide. It’s the government openly admitting that cannabis has some intense medicinal qualities.

Sure, I have been posting stuff like this over the past year or two.

The Next Mayor Of New York City Supports Marijuana Decriminalization

The primaries are over, and New York City has narrowed down its mayoral candidates to three; Republican Joseph Lhota, Democrat Bill de Blasio and Independent Adolfo Carrión, Jr.. All of these candidates are supporters of cannabis law reform, and are in favor of decriminalizing or legalizing cannabis.

Joseph Lhota was actually the first New York City mayoral candidates to come out in support of recreational cannabis legalization. Bill De Blasio is in support of decriminalizing cannabis, including public display; ”I support legislation to decriminalize the display of small amounts of marijuana,” he said during an interview in July, ”The current law saddles many young people with a criminal record unfairly and it must be changed.”

Carrión, Jr., the city’s Independent candidate, is also in strong support of decriminalizing cannabis.

Regardless of which candidate becomes the city’s next mayor, it’s clear that their view on cannabis policies will be drastically different from that of Mayor Bloomberg.

Cannabis Consumption Has No Negative Effect On Health, According To New Study

A new study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, and conducted by researchers at Boston Medical Center and the Boston University School of Medicine, has found that even heavy cannabis consumption has no negative effect on a person’s health status, or their use of health care services (such as emergency room visits).

For the study, researchers studied 589 adults who screened positive for drug use during a primary care visit. Data was then collected on these patients, examining their drug use, their emergency room use and hospitalizations, and their overall health status. In addition, further information regarding past medical diagnoses was obtained from their medical records.

After conducting the study, researchers found absolutely no differences between the health and hospitalization of daily cannabis consumers, compared to those who use no cannabis at all.

“Our findings suggest that marijuana use has little measurable effect on self-reported health or healthcare utilization in adults using drugs identified in a primary care clinic,” says Daniel Fuster, MD, the lead author for the study.

This study combats the prohibitionist argument that tax revenue brought in through cannabis legalization will be offset by increased healthcare costs.
