You had good parenting, therefore you were mature enough to make smart decisions.

If your parents had been less effective or attentive, you probably wouldn't be the person you are today. And it is people who come from those kind of backgrounds who end up making bad decisions around the age of 18, when they suddenly have a lot of freedom and no real sense of how to handle it.

To my eyes, 18 is a little young to be deemed a full adult. I'd say 21 is closer the mark, especially for guys.

I had a friend who grew up on a hippie commune. The same one Picabo Street came out of. His resolve was to be opposite of what his parents were. He was more mature than I was and he grew up in a less than opportune situation. The thing is with all their faults his parents loved him. I will never forget driving to a Grateful Dead concert in his dad's old VW bus. His dad thought we needed to experience it. It was cool. I saw all the faults but just viewed it as a historical moment. LOL! The concert was in Eugene, Oregon and hippies had stolen all of Albertsons grocery carts to haul their shit to the venue in and there was a constant green cloud of smoke rising from the stadium.

I can still smell that bus and hear that flat four making all it's wonderful weird noises.

Exactly - he had parents who loved him, even if their methods were unorthodox he still had a stable family structure.

I have great parents. They'll do anything for me. Whenever I need something they are always there.

But there are people who didn't have parents like you and I. Who maybe are destructive or don't know any better.

          I don't know. It's a very complex subject.

I don't know. I am left. I think we should take care of each other. All for one, one for all :-) Solidarity.

It was a good commune. Some were notorious for child and women abuse. Some good kids came out of there actually. Some of the men there were river guides in the summer on the Salmon river and that is how I got my job as a river guide. They were river guides in the summer and groomed the ski trails in the winter. Actually not a bad bum life. The cost of living now would make that impossible today.

That's why the communists wanted to tear families apart so institutions would raise the children. They constantly try it but families are hard things to break actually. Nothing wrong with helping each other but what you have to be careful of is someone centralizing the power of that and using the excuse of doing good to cover a controlling agenda. That's what is creeping in at the moment. They actually love fucked up societies so they can come in and offer the fix which means treating everyone like a two year old and taking all the power. Look at Bloomberg in New York City as an example. Fuck that guy.

Yes it is and when a committee tries to fix it, they just fuck it up more.

It's the truth. Life is tough. That's why I call this planet upper hell. It might have it's good times but they never last and someone is always in your way. Money just creates new problems and more enemies. Enjoy!

I've been here long enough and seen enough of this rock to know I came here for the entertainment value. Utopias are nice dreams but the quest only fucks things up more. Technology only multiplies the fuck ups and makes them bigger. It's never going to be fixed. Just laugh it off and ask yourself what did you do in a previous life to deserve this shit? When its bad it really bad and when it's good, it's not that great.

If you are going to be wreakless at age 18 do a damn good job of it. I mean put the pedal to the metal and the balls to the wall. Have a good time and be sure to die young doing it because if you live long enough you will only regret your poor decisions.

This reminds me of the debate from the movie Trading Places. Is it the environment or is it the person? From my personal observation the ones who seem to make it out of bad home situations are what you would call a naturally positive person and they have natural motivation. Some people just have those traits. David Lee Roth has that. Heck. I hate to say it but Sammy Hagar has a bit of it. That guy came out of a pretty fucked up home situation and nobody gave him a silver spoon. I don't think Dave really got much of a silver spoon. It sounds like his dad made him earn his keep.
