I thought it was a known thing that any personal news about canidates and their families was timed in elections because it may help/hinder some part of a campaign?

Doesn't matter who it is. It could have been held until after because it might have biased voters and forced them to not vote for that team.

If they had won, the info could have been held even later, maybe until she even started treatment. Thing is, we won't know how it would have played out if they won. Same is if it was held or not. It could have been, it could not have been. But the possibility that it was is there.
