In the 1994-2002 General Social Surveys (GSS), Republicans have over 6/10ths of a year more education on average than Democrats. Republicans also have a higher final mean educational degree. Further, Republicans scored better than Democrats on two word tests in the GSS--a short vocabulary test and a modified analogies test.

If one breaks down the data by party affiliation and political orientation, the most highly educated group is conservative Republicans, who also score highest on the vocabulary and analogical reasoning tests. Liberal Democrats score only insignificantly lower than conservative Republicans. The least educated subgroups are moderate and conservative Democrats, who also score at the bottom (or very near the bottom) on vocabulary and analogy tests.

Hoax Alert: Child prodigy blogger Matthew Yglesias linked to a table purporting to show IQs by state, with Democrats doing much better in the high IQ states.

I asked the college student who posted the table where he got the data and he replied:

It turns out that this table is going around the liberal blogs, such as the Daily Kos. For example, the American Assembler claims:

"This chart is derived from taking the Ravens Advanced Progressive Matrices of average IQ by state (Source:IQ and the Wealth of Nations)"

This same attribution pops up verbatim on other sites.

It's a HOAX.

I own "IQ and the Wealth of Nations." I read it extremely carefully. I've written a lengthy review of the book: http://www.vdare.com/sailer/wealth_of_nations.htm. As the title suggests, it's about the average IQs of nations, not states. There's nothing in it about IQs by states.

Also, anyone familiar with the topic would quickly recognize the fallaciousness of the data. The 113 figure for Connecticut is way too high. The 87 for Utah is a joke.

Somebody probably got the idea from Lynn & Vanhanen's book and made up some numbers by starting with the income table (that's why the correlation with IQ is so high). The goal, obviously, was to make Democrats feel superior.

The funny thing is that this hoax will be the first time that any liberals will have ever heard of IQ and the Wealth of Nations, which is probably the most important book published in this century.

The numbers are clearly fallacious: for example, Utah, according to him, has an average IQ of 87, the second lowest in America. Yet, on the National Assessment of Educational Progress achievement tests, its children score above the national average on Reading, Math, and Science, and Utah trails Connecticut (purported IQ of 113) by only small amounts on every subject except Writing, where Utah does oddly bad. And Utah is ahead of New York (purported 109) in several categories.

In terms of education and party voting, there existed in 2000 a U shaped pattern, with Gore doing best with the least and most educated.

This comes from the Voter News Service exit poll of 13,000 voters.

If you weight this data on a 1 to 5 scale, with the the high school dropouts as 1, then the two candidates are almost exactly equal, with Bush edging out Gore by the meaninglessly tiny margin of 3.29 to 3.28. This means the average Bush and Gore voters both fall between "Some College" (3.0) and "College Graduate (4.0).

I consider myself fairly intelligent and my IQ is MUCH higher than the highest Bush state. As a matter of fact, it is higher than the highest Kerry state, but that doesn't matter. I voted for Bush.

I am not a Hick. Trust me, Atlanta, is not a "hick town" anymore. Maybe 20 or 30 years ago, but not now. It's more like Hip/Hop town now. So, that argument falls flat.
