    Friday, December 03, 2004

MADRID, Spain — Spanish media are reporting that at least one explosion -- and possibly as many as four blasts -- have gone off in Madrid following a warning from a Basque (search) group.

Basque newspaper Gara reported on its Web site on Friday that a phone call in the name of the group, ETA (search), said five bombs had been placed in the Madrid area and were set to explode later in the day.

Reuters reported that four explosions were reported at gas stations while The Associated Press was reporting one blast.

    Madrid blasts after ETA warning
Friday, December 3, 2004 Posted: 1:08 PM EST (1808 GMT)

MADRID, Spain -- Three or four explosions have been reported in Madrid -- at least one at a gas station -- after a warning from the Basque separatist group ETA, state radio said Friday.

A telephone caller issued the warning in the name of ETA, saying five bombs were set to explode at 1730 GMT, Basque newspaper Gara reported on its Web site, according to Reuters.

Radio stations later reported four explosions. The blasts were small and no casualties were reported, Reuters quoted the reports on Radio Ser and National Radio as saying.

One device exploded at a gas station near a highway packed with people leaving the city for a long holiday weekend, the news agency Efe quoted the station manager as saying, according to The Associated Press.

ETA is considered a terrorist group by Spain.
