the trade facts you are talking about ,Originally posted by Big Train
I say we are a financing and intellectual property based economy, which is the source of our problem. The world refuses to respect our intellectual property (as do our own citizens), which means half of our economy is out the window.
We don't manufacture, we finance. Looking at the trade facts in our threads, it is obvious that we are in financing finished goods and services. Raw materials from Canada and elsewhere and labor from whereever. Global Nafta (thanks Bill).
Your thoughts?

When you stop earning the title, I'll stop calling you a fuckin retard...
READ THE POST. It starts off with the words "I SAY" meaning the following words are an observation. There are no facts in any of that. We could debate indicators such as the unemployment rate, factory orders etc., to make further OBSERVATIONS. I am just offering my theory on our current economic state.
Stop being an idiot and I'll be nicer to you..maybe.Comment

OD, I don't think we will ever get to 0% capacity, but the overall number of jobs will certainly never be as high as they were. The raw materials thing is actually a way to protect OUR resources, by buying others. It is cheaper and easier as countries like Canada and Russia have an excess of raw materials.
Well, with the economics of competitive advantage, (and absolute advantage too in this case) it makes sense that Russia would concetrate on producing raw materials. I don't understand why Canada is not out mirror image in terms of refining capacity. What the hell do you guys do with yourselves up there?
Either way we're (US) at the 3rd stage of developement with the information shit. But no one's been here before, and no one has gone passed us.
I mean, our manufacturing was one of the big reasons we won WWII. I know the economics now nessesitate that we concentrate on what we're best at. But if we close down every plant and we get an emergency, how the hell will we be able to make the products we need to survive? It's all a short-term profit generating sell-off game. It doesn't matter how high and dry we are left at the end. Same with other facets of our economy, like the stranglehold big oil has on our gov't. It doesn't care that the oil will run out shortly. It doesn't care about the environment. It doesn't give a shit how many Iraqis get wasted. PROFITS.
I'm really starting to think some protectionism is the way to go. Not like that means anything...gnaw on itComment

Well, that is sorta what I am driving at. If we are indeed the time of economy I think we are, then a lot of people in this country are totally fucked, in that they are completely unprepared for this new setup. Factory workers for sure, but also people who add goods and services to the economy (managers etc..) who there will be nothing left to manage, watch, create.
As far as intellectual property, nobody outside and most inside this country don't give a fuck about it (ex. CD's and movies, consumer goods, shoes etc..) are what this economy is based on. When countries like China are exploiting not only their workers, but OUR intellectual property, they are fucking us good.
As far as Canada, it is probably better all around for you to be in the raw materials business. It is easier and probably more profitable still to just ship out volumes of raw materials.
It is like I have said many times, we need to invent new industries and dominate them.
yeah, most citizens in this country are fucked now, and I forsaw this more than 10 years ago...it will get worse for many more too at the pace we are working at.....Comment
