Poll shows troops in support of war

Poll shows troops in support of war
    By Robert Hodierne, Army Times

Despite a year of ferocious combat, mounting casualties and frequent deployments, support for the war in Iraq remains very high among the active-duty military, according to a Military Times Poll.
Sixty-three percent of respondents approve of the way President Bush is handling the war, and 60% remain convinced it is a war worth fighting. Support for the war is even greater among those who have served longest in the combat zone: Two-thirds of combat vets say the war is worth fighting.

But the men and women in uniform are under no illusions about how long they will be fighting in Iraq; nearly half say they expect to be there more than five years.

In addition, 87%% say they're satisfied with their jobs and, if given the choice today, only 25% say they'd leave the service.

Compared with last year, the percentages for support for the war and job satisfaction remain essentially unchanged.

A year ago, 77% said they thought the military was stretched too thin to be effective. This year, that number shrank to 66%.

The findings are part of the annual Military Times Poll, which this year included 1,423 active-duty subscribers to Air Force Times, Army Times, Navy Times and Marine Corps Times.

The subscribers were randomly surveyed by mail in late November and early December. The poll has a margin of error of +/—2.6%.

    Among the poll's other findings:

    •75% oppose a military draft.

•60% blame Congress for the shortage of body armor in the combat zone.

•12% say civilian Pentagon policymakers should be held accountable for abuse at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

It's amazing the way things can be spun.

25% of the US military want the fuck out and this is seen as positive?

    Jesus Mithras!

Funny, why is the National Guard missing recruitment goals by 33%? For the first time in history I might add...

I never knew anyone that subscribed to this, so this survey is not very authentic or accurate.

Those were Reservists actually. Slight difference in that the N.Guard must be 'federalized' in order to be sent to Iraq.

You can make a poll say anything you want.

Everybody knows that. When people mature they know that.

You just had a birthday, but you're still...not mature.

I know that. I say that -- all the freaking time. Do you see me posting here and arguing for the survey? No.

There are a lot of people here who post polls and put weight in them, especially when it helps reflect their side of things. So for those, I posted this thread.

I'm allowed to post threads about stuff I find interesting, Phil. If that makes me "not mature", fine. Posting an article doesn't mean I have to agree with it. Posting it means I found it interesting enough to share. Where do you see my stamp of approval or where I say this is the know-all, end-all of opinion among the troops?

I think it is you being "not mature" by jumping to conclusions on someone due to their age, grandpa.

But, ah, you are only posting this because you found out you weren't on my ignore list and I just wasn't paying attention to you.

I just had a birthday? Today is my birthday. Shows how close to detail you are, Phil

Validity of polling magazine subsribers (the ones with enough time on their hands to fill out a poll and send it in), I think it's downright pathetic that 40% of the military-employed respondents think the war is not worth fighting. 40%! That's almost half. That's fucking terrible. Just terrible.

Ally, I realize you understand the inherent limitations of polls, but I still have to have my say on this.
