Good works don't get you to the 1st resurrection.

Jesus made it simple to get to the promised land:

"Repent your sins and believe in the kingdom"

Jesus of course, is King of the Kingdom, and claimed that n one will see the Father without going through him first (he's the judge, jury and executioner) so it means repent of your sins and believe in Him.

Period.

But talking the talk is all good and well, and saying you believe something is nice, but what have you done for Him lately (Janet Jackson)?

When he goes through the books, he checks the Book of Life first to see if your name is there. The Book of Life has all those folks' names that I talked about above. If it's there, you will get through the 2nd book since your covered by Christ. The 2nd book has everybody's deeds and thoughts written in there (good and bad). And it's not pretty. So when He goes through that 2nd book, and sees your actions, you'll have to answer for them. Since no one will have a good excuse or reasoning for anything in that book, your name better be in the 1st book. If it's not, then you'll go directly to the 2nd resurrection (and that's not pretty).
