This is definitely one of the best games ever made. The scenario is from the Cold War, back in the days when the Soviet Union existed. And of course they're up to no good. In fact, a nuclear attack on the good old US of A is imminent. Your task? To stop the attacks by destroying all Soviet launch sites and finally lead an assault on the Soviet Defense Center.

The Soviets have just launched a nuclear attack

The first screen you see in the game is this overview of Earth. Soaring above our home planet in space is the US Space Station with Stealth fighter aircraft. The map shows American cities (which are possible targets for Soviet attacks) and Soviet launch sites/cities. This screen also shows a cluster of soviet missiles, just launched at Atlanta.
To stop the attack you need to get a Stealth fighter and attack the Minsk site, from which the attack was launched. Press space to enter the space station...
"Hurry Mr Commando, you must save America!"

Your commandos will scramble to their planes (one at a time) - then it is your task to get them out of there. And that can actually be a bit tricky in zero-g... Once you get a fighter out, you will return to the overview map, and guide the fighter to your target (a launch site). Once there you begin an attack run over Soviet territory.

Action is pretty hot in the Soviet Union

To avoid Soviet radar you go in low. Shoot any ground targets you can spot, and generally try to stay alive to reach the launch site. Beware of the heat-seeking missiles that come up behind you.

The launch silos, guarded by enemy aircraft

When you make it to the launch silos, your primary mission is to shoot down the center silo (control silo). Other silos can be shot down for extra points and aircraft. You will also have to engage Soviet airplanes that guard the silos. Once the center silo is destroyed, your mission here is complete.

You need to destroy three Soviet launch sites before starting your attack on Moscow - or rather, your Raid over Moscow. The raid begins with a flying sequence similar to previous ones. You are then stationed with your men outside the Soviet Defense Center.

"Hello mr Soviets, sirs. Would you like some rockets for lunch?"

Here you must shoot down the doors of the building to find the entrance (it's the white door). Then clear the square of all enemy troops. This can be quite hard, since destroyed troops have the very annoying habit of reappearing.

In the last sequence you enter the reactor hall, where you must shoot down some maintenance robots using disc grenades. I leave the screen shot out so that you have something to look forward to.

This thread deserves respect. Bomb the Rooskies, bed their women, that's my type of game.

It's a little knwon fact that:

the Soviets invaded Finland just prior to WWII to force the Finnish Gov't to cede territory for strategic purposes, and for a time, the Finns handed their ass to them. Unfortunately Soviet weapons and numbers forced the Finns to concede eventually.

                    HERE...

"Well you see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.

And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers...."

Was that from the 1541 floppy drive or the even more pathetic C2N cassette tape?

I never had this game for the Commodore 64, but I seem to remember playing a similar game on the Apple II in high school.

I was never a vid game player, too stingy with the quarters and my brother never let me touch his C64.

I was busy killing the weaker brain cells and learning the guitar.
