Do something good and ease down on the hypocrisy.

You can't be serious?!?! Are you NUTS?!? You don't know me AT ALL. If you think you do you are losing your grip on reality and maybe you should think about stepping away from the computer for a few days to gain some perspective as to what the internet is all about. It's the INTERNET! None of us know eachother as well as we'd like to think we do.

So, you want me to jot down everything I've said in praise of the Pope and the Catholic Church's teachings? Do you have a few days? I was born and raised a Catholic and I have never strayed from the church. Whom I pray for is personal and I need not share it with anyone else. However, I can tell you that you are wrong about me. Totally wrong.

You're really making yourself look silly here. Also, a bit dillusional.

yeah, and it usually goes like this:

        "are you serious?"

        "is the pope Catholic?"

Writing In All Proper Case Takes Extra Time, Is Confusing To Read, And Is Completely Pointless.

It's great that the pope got to live to a ripe old age.
You can't say the same for AIDS victims in Africa who listened to the church's advice on condoms and contreception.

The leaders of the Catholic Church are full of themselves. They enjoy patting themselves on the back but because it is an undemocratic institution, CRONYISM denies accountablity or internal criticism.

While people like Mother Theresa do deserve respect for attempting to help out the poor, and the Pope deserves respect in terms of speaking out against communism, much of the good they do in terms of missionary work is cancelled out in horrific corruption (blaming "homosexuality" (the Pope) for the problem of children being raped) or telling unknowledgeable third-worlders that contreception is immoral. Certainly the church did not start the AIDS epidemic in Africa, but in the face of it (and considering their leverage), telling poor folks that contreception is AGAINST GOD is unconscionable.

The Pope isn't so bad - he's working against over a thousand years of church corruption....but I just don't think he's "so damn good" either. Hopefully, the next Pope will wake up to the realities of the world so that the good actions of the church are not cancelled out by the bad.

All this, as a former Catholic, is just my opinion of course.

Don't you go telling me about the INTERNET. You started a thread about the pope dying, and therefore you should be able to deal with the fact that some folks here have opinions against the pope, against the catholic religion and also some of us don't really give a non-flying fuck.

If being a catholic does it for you, good for you. It sure hasn't made you seem less sour or open-minded, you seem uptight and unwilling to discuss your religion, and I don't mean your very personal habits.

You still sound like all the people who raised a big noise about the Tsunami, and when the last white body was out of there they forgot about it. You start a thread about the pope but only "R.I.P." posts are allowed?

                  Just a casual observation here.

The next pope will probably have to work a bit more.

I wonder where the papal scepter will land?

If I was the next pope, I'd move my shit to Milano or something.

That vatican city window you always see just screams tenement.

Being a dysfunctional, disillusioned Catholic in a heavily Catholic area, I have a large degree of ambivalence towards the Church in general and the Catholic hierarchy in particular. I rarely attend church and all that, and tend to be very conflicted on my beliefs.

Ambiguity is a word that best describes the Catholic Church. They've protected pedophiles, not only in the US by the way, and have hoarded for centuries great wealth; yet the Church has done incredible charitable works for the poor and needy around the world. But the Church also set up a system that is disconnected from the original conceptualization of Christianity, which had loose affiliations of worship and a communial sense. They adopted a model, well lets do a quiz on your Catholic knowledge, The Catholic Church adopted a hierarchical structure based on what system? First correct answer gets a special Jesus blessed Merlot and free passes to SISTER ACT:.

But seriously, whatever you think of POPE JOHN PAUL, he did contribute greatly to the ending of COMMUNISM through his work with the POLISH SOLIDARITY movement and such. Here's another piece of PAPISH trivia for you, What did the POPE do during WWII?

He was a soldier in the Polish Army that fought the Nazis in 1939. When Poland was conquered, he entered the seminary to avoid a POW camp. He then became a resistance fighter (I think).

You can argue with some of the policies he's enacted, but you can't argue with his heart.

He's fought both fascism and communism.

This time it's for real. Let's have competing threads.

Where'd you hear that? Didn't he work in a quarry for 4 years after his university was closed down and then studied at a seminary in secret?
