The Canadian system is government funded at provincial (state) level... so they've somewhat eliminated insurers from hospitalization and certain common physician services. Very similar to US Medicare/Medicaid. That's a start... that could be accomplished in the US. But it's a hellova fight going up against the insurance companies...
The biggest challenge would be dismantling/restructuring the financial structure of the health system we have in the US without destroying our overall economy and stock markets... it still needs to happens no matter how difficult it would be.
