Mamdani at the last count I saw - which was 92% of the vote in - was at 43% to Cuomo's 36%.
So Mamdani may not crack 50%. Not that going over the halfway mark is a requirement for victory in a primary. And it isn't to say Mamdani won't therefore go on to win the office.
It looks like a Mamdani/Adams/Sliwa race.
The general vibe was that Cuomo didn't have any particular reason for being in the race beyond trying to reattain some kind of elected office in New York State. Like his father, Cuomo never took off nationally. The top seat in Albany was his ceiling, and that is forever behind him now. Even being Mayor of NYC isn't the prestige job it once was after the likes of DeBlasio and Adams floundered.
So, what does it say that while a basically purposeless candidate like Cuomo was defeated by Mamdani, it wasn't exactly a 10-point trouncing? And this is among New York City primary voters, mind you? That not insubstantial numbers of them were still willing to vote for Cuomo anyway.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment
